Need help in fireplace option
Comments (0)Our lounge is 7.40 m X 5.50 m. I would like to have a fire place in the room as it feels cold and I am not sure what style to go for. There is no chimney in the house so real fire is not an option. I attach 2 pictures for the lounge when we first moved. Comments (9)Ooo thanks so much for the response. I love these ideas. I prefer the soft white look of the limestone. But the Carrara marble would be more authentic to the era. So it’s tough to decide. Particularly like the last fireplace surround on your first post (the London fields house). That looks to be a Carrara marble. Do you think that option would go with our fireplace insert tiles? Comments (3)Between the two, I like A with the bedrooms towards the back keeping them a little more private. It ultimately depends on your preference, and if you like the idea of your kitchen/diner with direct access/views of the garden? In option A, I would probably look at putting the kitchen at the front to make the most of the light and moving the dining room to the darkest room. Again, it comes down to personal preference and if you prefer having more of lounge/diner at the front. Comments (7)Wumi is exactly right: build a chimney breast 300mm deep and alcove cupboards and shelving 280mm deep. The chimney breast should protrude slightly further than the cupboard to make a feature. The fire surround should then be fixed to the chimney breast. If it's a gas fire, you need to take advice on materials to build the breast, as a softwood frame covered with plasterboard may not be legal as a fire hazard. An iron fireplace would have been considered old fashioned in the 1930s. The general principle seems to be that they would sometimes be used on upstairs fireplaces, but definitely not on downstairs ones. The possible exception would be low-budget houses like council housing.
I needed to replace two fireplaces that had already been ripped out in my house. For the upstairs one. I went for a 1907 all-in-one iron fireplace that (to my eyes) looks very minimal and 1930s. For downstairs, I got an insert that was reclaimed from a 1930s house. It was less than £100 and I love it (second photo). Both were off eBay. I did have to be patient to find one I liked in the right size.
I still haven’t finished getting it all installed, though! I will tile the hearth and inside the insert, so it ends up a bit like the first photo.
