Dishwasher Installation / Location - Queries

First time home owners and home renovating. We'd like to install a dishwasher, the issue is that there is no plumbing other than what is already connected to the washing machine but also we need to find the best location for a dishwasher. Preferably we are looking to get a larger dishwasher meaning we will need to remove at least one and a half cupboards.

Any tips on the below would be great :)

- There is a drain outside the front door on both sides, so for the first image, would this mean it could be possible to have additional pipe work installed here for a dishwasher? (any ideas on what cost to expect for this would be good)

- For the second image, we'd prefer to put the dishwasher where the fridge currently is and take out a cupboard to the left (and then to put the fridge where the cupboards are in the first image) but due to the corner cupboard being there would this be difficult/impossible to do?

- What service/tradesperson is best for removing cupboards? (cautious about the stability of the counter after removing so don't want to mess it up)

Any opinions where you may think is best and why?

Just any advice or opinions on this would be good really, anything we'd not considered etc - cheers!

Congratulations on becoming a home owner - always exciting to start to put your mark on a property!

To briefly answer your question (without the benefit of a closer inspection):

While having a drain on both sides of your door helps from a drainage point of view, you would still need to consider how to run you water feed to that side of the kitchen. And even then, I would not advocate putting it immediately behind the back door, as opening the back door would clash with the dishwasher door.

From a cost point of view, therefore, the lowest cost/impact location would be where your fridge currently is, then relocating that to the far side.

Regarding sizes - it doesn’t look as though you will fit a full width (60cm) dishwasher there, but I would suggest just getting a “slimline” (45cm) which are remarkably spacious and normally adequate for a couple or small family. Water & drainage feeds will be easy enough to run from your sink area without major drama.

I wouldn’t worry about removing your cupboard affecting the integrity of the worktop - a small timber batten or a couple of brackets will be more than adequate to support.

As to who to get to do the works - they need to be competent in plumbing and general basic carpentry (not a major part of the job), and if they have the relevant ticket for electrics to add a socket, all the better. You can usual find a few such “multi-skilled” folk in any are - seek out recommendations if you don’t already know good tradesmen, and check a reference or two.

When it comes to the work, get a fixed price quote and check what is included/excluded. Be clear on what work you need done and try to stick to that - chopping & changing or adding to a list is a sure way to see your bill rocket! If you have other works you intend to do on the property, consider bundling them together to get a better overall price.

With any “starter” home, I’d always urge caution not to overspend - there is always a ceiling value for any property (particularly starter properties) and if you have one eye on moving up the property ladder, only do works that will see a good return.

The design layout could do with changing if this is a two chef kitchen - as currently hob and sink share same floor standing space, the DW when open blocks the walkway - oven is danger to anyone opening door... The FF is not what you want - the list goes on !!! Difficult to help further with no sizes - I could guess from the doors - but no head on shot of the right wall so a bit tricky - this could be a 'very quick' job as a sketch consult on an hourly rate, if you want pro help - drop me an email ! If you were thinking of using ikea for example - you could buy and have installed the carcase's, drawers, worktop, sink and appliances and then add the facia fronts as and when you have spare cash - this would stretch your money a little further ... £4k is still a lot of money - invest it wisely !

I haven't yet owned a Miele appliance, although I have used other people's and know that they are top quality. So I would love my first dishwasher to be a Miele and maybe this would convince my partner that having a dishwasher is an improvement on washing dishes by hand.

Try looking on your local selling groups and Facebook marketplace as they come up all the time. People sell then when they get too big for their hours or when they move and they can’t be bothered to take them with them, ha ha. The new bathroom is still a shell :0( It’s been delayed because it’s now an internal room and we have been trying to work out about putting an outside window in ie cost (around £600!) vs is it worth it because it’s easy facing with a house opposite so gets no sun. Would always have to turn the light on - plus it would be above the shower so can’t open etc. Seems a lot of hastle! I have a separate thread on it somewhere... But anyway, we might create an internal window into the utility and borrow the light from the kitchen?? Not perfect but it’s some natural light at least. Will update the bathroom thread as need help with the shower anyway ;0)

Yes, I would put the dishwasher where the fridge is. Not too far for any additional pipe work and drainage to be run. You might get a full size d/w in if you lose a cupboard but I should think a slimline would suffice.

If possible, I would put the dishwasher where the washer is. It's close to the sink without obstructing it (or anything else) while open, whereas if you put it where the fridge is, you wouldn't be able to stand in front of the sink while loading the dishwasher.

Is there a place outside the kitchen where the washer would fit with access to plumbing?
