large front garden design

Hello - I’m looking for ideas to design our front garden which is mainly just lawn at the moment. Budget is tight so ideally i would like a plan that I could implement over time - it’s a large space and I’m not quite sure where to begin but I do think I’d like a lovely water fountain in the middle of the front garden and a lot more trees and planting.

When you say the budget is tight, how tight? It doesn't look like a tight budget house to me.

Don't think much more planting is needed I'd spend money on lawn treatments & a good rear roller mower that grassed area would look immense with a good lawnmower looking after it

Rachel and Carolina, thank you both so much for taking some of your time to think and design those sketches, it has really helped me in a stage I was blocked in my project. I now can keep on moving forward, that's so great. Carolina, I like your designs and they are actually similar to the sketches I was doing before I imported the soil in the garden but I think at this stage, following the natural curves of the garden will be much easier for me. I really like a lot of ideas you emitted. I will indeed add a birdbath somewhere and possibly a mini pond :-D Rachel, you just put into words and sketch a vague idea that I had but that I didn't know how to formulate! you basically read my mind. yes, I noticed there was some natural lines, and I wanted something more in curves but I didn't know how. your design makes it all look possible and realistic. to answer your questions, the round things are wine bottles. I was thinking of adding more wine bottles for edging but they might be a bit too short for high enough raised beds. I'll have to think about it... yes, the silver planter is a dolly tub. I was thinking of planting a clematis in it and some colourful flowers at the base of the clematis. I thought it would look nice somewhere against the white wall... thank you both so much about your ideas. I'll send you an update when it's more advanced. (it might take a long time though, but I'll get there!)

Lovely house, lovely front garden! Bit of a shame to have to create a parking space, but I appreciate your preferences. I'm no expert but can only try to encourage you to have as much green and planting area as possible. :) Next door may be a good example of how not to do it.

How about a sweet lavender hedge all along the front? It will create a visual barrier to drivers. You can them add other plants like Geraniums, Cistus, Euphorbias, Erigeron, Alchemilla Mollis etc and scatter some gravel in between. They don’t need much attention apart from a cut back in spring. Although you may be prioritising spending money on the inside of the house you need a plan for the outside even if you can’t afford to do it all at once.

It it were me I would want to get rid of some of the trees near the house, partly because they threaten the house…. But also they probably make it dark, there are security concerns if your house is hidden from view and I think it’s good to be able to see a house that is grand looking as you approach.

Separately I would be planning a carriage drive because I bet currently cars are parked in front of the house rather than in front of the garage. You might also consider if you would ever build on a Porte cochere and plan accordingly.

The fountain idea is in keeping with the grand look of the house…. But I suspect leaf fall will make it a maintenance headache

I like the natural style of the garden. It reminds of those gorgeous front lawns in American movies, just lawn and trees. I can’t quite see how near the trees in front of the house are to the house, but maybe more trees near the fence perimeter, something like white Silver Birch which are beautiful with and without their leaves. A fountain sounds great but you will need access to electricity to run the pump. They are a bit of maintenance as the pump will need cleaning as it gets clogged up with silt and leaves.

Hi there,

So refreshing to see such a big front garden - what a lovely space full of possibilities you hve there!

You are right, having a plan is great as it allows you to achieve the project bit by bit without loosing sight of the bigger picture! It is good to make a list of what you want out of the garden as matching it with your garden conditions (shape, level of light etc etc) is what will give you a thriving design that corresponds to what you expect from it.

As has already been said here, a fountain will require some maintenance, so maybe another type of focal point at the middle of the garden (such as a big nicely planted urn with some nice planting on it) would be a good alternative. Also, having some nice planting around it would draw the eye and make it stand out even more.

I would try to keep the design a bit to the formal side to keep with the grand look of the house.
