There is however no doubt that the individuals sent the first time did not have the skill level to carry out the work, the finish is poor and the original firm need to source better workers to complete your job. However the sympathy of earlier posters and claims they wouldn’t have them back won’t resolve your issues. You need to put your complaints in writing and state what you expect to be done to resolve the issue and a timescale. Don’t forget to send the letter by recorded delivery to prove they received it. In my opinion the complaint should concentrate on the poor tiling and the absence of preparation before decorating rather than the cost of the work which you agreed to at the outset. The CAB are right that you have no legal redress unless you give this company opportunity to resolve the issues first and in fairness by agreeing a fixed fee for work you are likely contractually entitled to call them back for remedial works. You are also right to withhold payment but after their next visit need to be realistic about the expected result- you will no doubt be looking for faults but the expected results should be competent/tidy/smart looking as perfection is unachievable.

Hi Olly, Answering your Q on my old thread. We have the same hang over as Alex although it wasn't as deep as we originally wanted it. Yes it goes get hot in summer but then we open the doors out. It's also warm in winter when there's any sun at all so so far in this open plan room, I've only had the wood burner on at night and no heating. We decided that if it's the same this year then we will just put some roller blinds over each section (or say over every two sets) which we can pull down when we want and it's cheaper than permanent heat control.

The biggest issue you have is timing. Anyone trying to build/remodel/extend is finding that prices are through the roof right now. Your situation is tough and no option is going to be what you originally wanted - the planned remodelling at £150k. So you’ve got to choose the next best solution or least worst option. In your shoes I would get the house habitable and move in. Yes it will cost money to do that but you’re throwing rent money away & have been for quite a while. Live in the house, get a feel for it & you might find your thoughts on the remodelling evolve. You may need to wait for a year or two for prices to steady/come down to get close to your budget or your budget might also be able to move upwards. Given the difference between your budget & the quotes (and it’s almost inevitable you’ll spend more anyway) - smallish tweaks aren’t going to bridge the gap. Why is selling not an option? It’s extreme but maybe cutting your losses may be one way out of this.
