Fridge placement!

We've changed our minds on where we are locating the kitchen again but now we are undecided where to place the fridge freezer!
We we're going to have it on the end of the worktop run but now I'm thinking of moving it over to the otherside so when entering the room you aren't hit with it on your left as you walk in but on the negative is having to cross over the door to get anything out! Am I being finicky? Just can't decide and need to order the kitchen!
On the plus side if we moved the fridge freezer we could have a longer run!

I have to admit l don’t like it where it is in image 1. As you say it’s the first thing you see when entering the room and blocks the overall vision. Could you jiggle that run of units to place it at the other end?

If there are no units over the other side then won’t it look strange just standing there on it’s own?

The other end of the run is an alcove as we have a chimney breast which the range is going so we would be able to open the door. The other side of the chimney breast is too narrow and we are having french doors so that's not an option.

My oh says the same about it being on the other side, odd next to the sofa but I don't want to have any units on that wall as want some sort of seating. Only issue with it being on that side possibly in the future we would remove the wall and extend the storage under the stairs.

Oh I don't know what to do with it. I did think about having under counter on that run but the fridge and freezer wouldn't be big enough.

Hi LTS, The sketch plan your architect has come up with is not what I would expect from a 'qualified' architect. If you didn't request a study why is it included? The dining table is orientated such that three of the eight seats do not allow a view of the garden but face the kitchen. The door to the utility room is in the wrong location which should be adjacent the kitchen and I'm not sure you need anything like the length of the utility room as shown. There could have been a little more thought given to structural matters at this stage - eg: the beam above kitchen will be large, expensive and cumbersome to install correctly. On the plus side the overall planning principles are OK - but the whole plan needs to be prepared to a larger scale (1:50) and to indicate clearly where each piece of furniture is to be placed and how the kitchen functions (worktop/cooker/worktop/sink sequence) before you make any commitments to the architect's proposal. Get into the whole detail of the plan now and avoid the headaches of having to alter designs as the work proceeds. There should be no charge from the architect for requesting this second stage work by the way. You should also insist on receiving an elevation and a section drawing at this stage together with a clear indication of how the extension will look when viewed from the garden and, most importantly what the architect thinks the whole of the work will cost and how long will it take. I would be inclined to have more of a U-shaped kitchen (or n-shaped looking at it this way up), with the cabinets starting to the right of that small window and continuing round the top wall to a peninsula between kitchen and dining area. You could do that and still have the sofa where it is in the first option. The fridge placement depends on where everything else is. The plans don't show where the sink, range, ovens, dishwasher, etc. are. Conventionally, the sink is in front of the window, though there's no law saying you have to have it there. You probably want the dishwasher next to the sink. If that were the case in option 1, your refrigerator is at the opposite end of the room from the sink. Depending what sort of cooking you do that might mean a lot of trips back and forth to get produce, wash it before prepping and cooking. On the other hand, you don't want the fridge too far into the kitchen as it is the one appliance that other people need easy access to for getting drinks and snacks. A piece of advice I was given was to plot our cooking on a plan. That might mean a line from fridge to sink to get cabbage to wash, another line to food processor to chop it, then to the range to cook it, to oven to turn it on, to pantry to get potatoes, etc. etc. Then you get to see how efficient the layout is. Or it might just be from freezer to microwave to dining table. A lot will depend on lifestyle. For me, both options seem quite elongated. Definitely, I suggest you start to think about where everything is going to go before making a call on the fridge. I would also think in terms of what you want/need. If you want a sofa there, then you can work that in. I would not put a dresser or hooks there unless that's what you need. Otherwise you'll just end up looking for stuff to put in the dresser or hanging stuff on hooks that really should be put away someplace else. You have a good sized place to plan around, so you should be able to ends up with something that suits you and looks good. In terms of saving money, we have friends who bought a second hand kitchen on eBay. Someone was renovating their kitchen and sold all their units online. It worked for them because they didn't have any awkward spaces to plan around. The end result was fantastic, though it did involve hiring a van and driving across London to collect it. Lastly, you need to recharge your phone battery.

Hi Jen D, I’m looking at this in a very small screen - but it looks to me that your walkways (around your island and your furniture )need to be a tad wider for ease of use. If you click on my name or icon - you will see a few projects we have done for clients - there’s some of similar proportions- maybe a straight run and a large island ? Or L shape rather than the U shape option ?

Have you got a door opening into the kitchen from a hall (or other room)? If so, hang it so that when open it covers the side of the fridge (in original position)?

Alternatively, could you position the fridge in the alcove next to the range, facing in the same direction as range? Then leave a space in front for the doors to open and then start the run of sink units? Quick sketch attached.

I really think the fridge should be in the kitchen part of the room, not beside the sofa, otherwise it's going to be a pain to walk over there each time but also it's going to look like you forgot about it when planning kitchen and it's a mistake.

Do you have an internal garage where you can put the large fridge freezer and then put undercounter ones in the actual kitchen?

We do have an outhouse which we're eventually convert in to a guest house. It could be an option to put a chest freezer in there as that's where our tumble dryer is but oh wants an American fridge freezer!

Our waste pipe will be coming out the wall where the alcove is as well forgot to mention that so not an option to put it there but would fit there otherwise.

Back to the drawing board I think

Sorry, I just re read your other response that it would block the French doors too much. I think you would regret putting it by the seating, not very relaxing when sitting. Could you sacrifice the American style for a normal width? So it isn't so overbearing in the room? Or leave by the door but have a tall slender shelf unit to the side so that there are decorative things in sight line when you enter?
