Cleaning disgusting steps!

Moved into a new property and the steps are in a rather abysmal state. Not very tooled up on home improvement, would a bleach solution or other treatment work? Or pressure washing? Thanks for any tips.

I couldn’t get your link to work. Do you mean outdoor steps up to the house? What material are the steps - stone, concrete, porcelain, bricks? I had all my paving jet washed the other day and it looks like new, well almost. No chemicals involved.

I would get a patio cleaner from a DIY store and borrow a pressure washer

No! Don’t use pink stuff paste or a magic eraser! Pink stuff spray is fine but not the paste. We have spare doors at work and have done tests on them. You should not use a product that is harsh such as paste because in time it will take the surface of the door off. If however your doors are so bad that they are ready for replacing you have nothing to loose. I’m now monitoring the removal of marks with baby wipes. For some strange reason they seem to shift a multitude of sins.

I think if you could find some Decking boards, maybe used, make a landing outside the door meeting the wall. It could be supported with a noggin along the wall and then you can make more steps and less steep, leading away from the painted wall. They could then fill the area between the window/door wall and the wall with the flower basket on it. It would be a lot more child friendly. Don't forget to cloak the area where the handrail would be close to the window. you would still need access to the window for cleaning, possibly stair Balustrade's/Spindles under a Bannister.

Thank you! Move in any time, as long as you don't mind selling a few bits of furniture while you're there :D You'll be pleased to hear we have started tackling the workshop and, two days of solid reorganisation later, I am exhausted but it's looking better. I'm sure with your skills it would have been done rather more efficiently/quickly but the rain hasn't helped - every time we moved things outside to give ourselves some space, it would start again and we'd be dragging it all back in! On the plus side it helped persuade me to part with some of the damper items ;)

You can use a jelly based paint remover which you apply and scrap off. It was traditional to paint stairs like that until the 1960's. The white gloss border was to allow you to see the stair in poor light (candles), the later brown colour was in fashion in the 1960's when you had a runner of carpet with the brown at each side of the step. On saying all that I would carpet them and save you all the work :)

I had something similar during our end of tenancy cleaning, and scrubbing alone wasn't cutting it. I rented a pressure washer and used warm water with a bit of patio cleaner first to break down the grime, then blasted it off. It took a bit of time, but the difference was huge. Just make sure to rinse everything well so it's not slippery afterwards.
