Gardens Design Dilemma Exteriors

Improving the external look….

Hi there, we have been living with the look of the front of the house for 4 years while we worked through an extension at the back. Now I feel like I’ve lost the love for my ideas. The pics are old now but what would you do with this property?

Structural wise leave it but spend your time and money on the garden to make it more interesting.

I saw these pics and thought of this post. They do show that getting the right palate can completely change the feel. I also liked that both of these has added some covered outside space. Don’t forget that any external remodelling will require planning permission. There are also architects who specialise in exterior remodelling

I think your plan is sound and exactly what I would wish to do in your position. I say go for it, it will look so much better. We had our windows changed but still have the old porch which is terrible, the only reason it's not done yet is because it requires a builder not just the window fitter and we have one booked to do ground floor renovations starting oct/Nov so have added it to his list instead. It would be a shame to change your windows but still not be happy with the front. I hope you can convince your husband, I hear your pain! Lol

Short term I would just change the glass in the windows for plain (unless there is a compelling reason to rip out the frames too). As far as the roof goes I would rather see a pitched roof with tiles to match the main house or a very contemporary flat roof. However I would delay changing that until you make other major changes….. for instance you may decide to make this extension full width, or to refit the kitchen or get rid of the side window which can’t serve much purpose. Long term you might conclude it can wait until you have trades in for other jobs. And the light being off centre and very high is weird and I would want that dealt with eventually

Would more substantial planters be something you would be interested in? I see one rather small, lack lustre little planter rather dwarfed by the wall it’s on. An investment in some coloured glazed planters in the same color on either side of the garage, with another under the window with a simple planting of petunias would bring some color.

Yes, nice planting is needed there. In front of the house and also at the borders. You could also add a nice specimen small tree for year around interest in the centre of the lawn. Just as always, remember to match right plant in right placr so that you have a thriving scheme.
