Tree Stump Help!

We had a tree removed a year or so ago but they couldn’t grind the stump down due to access in the garden. We don’t have access to get a digger in our back garden so I was wondering if anyone would know the best way to try and remove the stump! It’s currently in a raised bed which we want to flatten but getting the stump out is proving difficult! Many thanks

I had exactly the same issue with a tree stump that we always tripped over when accessing the back gate! We called another tree surgeon who ground out the stump with a very clever machine (hand held I think!) which turned the stump to sawdust which was very easy to then dispose of. Cost about £90 but it was about 10 years ago. It has never re-grown.

With some time and perseverance you can work on exposing individual roots and cutting through these individually. I used a crow bar to remove soil around each root then a pair of loppers or saw, depending on root width.

I wouldn't have put a lawn in. You can see how it goes, but they require a lot of mowing and it sounds like you don't get a lot of sun so it may well end up very mossy and wet most of the time. See how it goes but maybe you need the deck to be sited on the left, so it is in the sun in the middle of the day/evening if possible, so not near the house if it faces east. Evergreen climbers are essential for small gardens with fences. Trachelospermum jasminoides, has lovely scented flowers in the summer and Hydrangea seemannii and Pileostegia Viburnoides are good in shade. I would put in a lot of planting on the shady side of the garden, a good evergreen grass for clay is Carex pendula. I would also plant an Amelanchier or Acer at the far end to screen the neighbours windows and autumn colour. You could look up evergreen ground covers for shade. Good luck!

I THINK that it isn't a bonsai in the true sense of the word, but it is in fact a buxus or box plant., shaped and grown to appear tree like. The trouble is, If I'm right, I don't think the plant is a "dwarf" as such and will just try to grow like normal, which poses two problems, firstly it'll try to grow too big and secondly, the soil won't be enough to sustain it and it will look sickly and eventually die and if you feed it .....it will grow. That said I just THINK that's what it is, it may be worth taking it along to a good garden centre to get a confirmation of what it is first.

Turning it into a planter is a fab idea:) As the stump starts to rot down (this will take many years) it will hold lots of moisture and as an added benefit provide extra nutrients to the soil. Also very beneficial for wildlife as there will be plenty of places for insects to hide an in turn attract birds and those that feed on insects. A whole eco system in one! As for plants I think most would be happy with these conditions. Woodland plants and especially ferns I think would do particularly well. If your feeling more adventurous you could even make a little bird condo or bug hotel:-)

Hi. Mmmmm.... the examples you posted are specifically pruned to that shape and need to be kept pruned regularly. I call them lollipop trees😊. Most trees don’t usually grow to a set height then stop, unless trimmed they just keep on growing. Containers will need to be big as they need a good amount of root space and will conserve water better. I think you’ll find the containers more expensive than the trees/ shrubs themselves. This site has some good examples of ‘lollipop’ trees: https://www.paramountplants.co.uk/clear-stem-trees.html Not sure if any of them flower. There are lots of plants you could use for a specific planting scheme. A local garden nursery should be able to help with what would be suitable for your area.

I think the best opt is to get a professional in it will save a lot of time and energy AND think about the damage it could do to your body with torn muscles.

There is a product on the market called Resolve which is suppose to dissolve the stump. Don’t know how long it would take though. Best to check.

It will rot down with time. We had a cherry tree cut down as it was interfering with some telephone wires and it’s gone now. Mind you it took about 20 years to rot down!

You could just wait for it to rot but it could also be a cute little seat which could be fun!

I’ve not tried it but you can hire a tree stump grinder to do the job yourself. Places like Brandon Tool hire hire out from £105 per day. The grinder looks to be about the size of a large lawnmower.

Professional with stump grinder. Don't try diy. Probably not cost effective for 1 stump.
