Garden inspiration for small garden combined with driveway?
Comments (18)I need to resurrect this thread! So 2 years on we've completed all of the downstairs internal work, and knocked down the garage. We spread some grass seed, and there is now a garden space where once sat the garage. We did have a builder booked in for rebuilding the garage to the side of the house, and planned to add some decking where the patio doors are along the back of the house!/wall maybe, but now the builder has cancelled and is returning our cash, we're therefore reallocating funds to a much needed upstairs bathroom instead. I wonder if there are any budget friendly suggestions and ideas to make an area that will hold gardening tools/provide cover for my partner to do his hobbies by the side of the house? It's a wall then huge hedge beyond that which is directly parallel with a footpath and road on the other side. I thought about a shed but would the hedge not be impossible to cut and would it rot quicker, plus would the roots die off? We need to keep the hedge or have some privacy from the road, but equally need a place to store and use the space at the side. Thoughts?...See MoreHelp for a small paved garden please
Comments (45)I would personally forget about painting the fence. Not because I like the orange, but because I'm lazy and I would rather invest my time and money in plants and soil (improvement of) and big planters or raised beds if you're going for that. If you plant climbers against the fence, most of it will be hidden anyway. And if your plants get larger, they will hide most of the fence too. I have solar powered lights in my garden and they give a lovely atmosphere at night. Mine are from Ikea. I have fairy lights along a fence and different kinds of lights that you can just put anywhere you like. Would be lovely to dot some lights around in your garden too....See MoreA small tree, climber or shrub for very narrow space?
Comments (8)This is a rather expensive solution but it would give you instant cover. You could potentially look at creating your own version of this using some fairly tall individual plants and either planting in the very narrow gap or, as in this example in a trough/window box. I guess you might need to periodically scrape away top few centimetres of soil and refresh with new compost and/or mulch to keep nutrition levels in pot topped up. This example is a jasmine which would hopefully smell amazing but there are other options too (it says this trough is 20cm wide) https://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/star-jasmine-green-screen-trachelospermum-jasminoides-180cm-high-120cm-wide.html#SID=60...See MoreSmall Garden Design - Any help/advice much appreciated
Comments (10)Thanks everyone for your input and advice, it really has been much appreciated. As some have suggested, I think our next steps are to collate a "vision board" (if you like) of what we'd like to get the ball rolling. We've not had much luck with finding inspiration here, as most gardens, even with a compact filter seem to be significantly larger than our space or heavily floral focused, which don't get me wrong can look beautiful but is not quite what we're looking for. Pinterest (see, board) and Instagram seem to have a varied selection of both features and completed gardens (although most are much larger spaces). Once we have an idea of what we think we might like, we'll then reach out to some of the garden designer professionals (thanks to those who shared their details) to help reaffirm our plans. We're more than happy to roll up our sleeves and get with the graft and heavy lifting that might be involved, even if to cut down on cost, but we would be more than likely to get professionals in to ensure a quality execution/finish. We'll have have shop around a view various portfolios to gauge what sort of prices we should be expecting to pay for the various services (e.g. Design, Landscaping etc...) but we're in a much better place to start. Finger crossed, we'll be able to update you all with progress soon....See Moreanita imam
