Hello,
I am in the process of deciding on the kitchen design and layout. After couple of designs I am completely stuck as I don’t like any so far.
I thought we had quite a generous space for the kitchen, but somehow it looks like I won’t have much space for decent size island and because I wasn’t too keen on top cupboards, there won’t be enough storage.
I really want a minimalist kitchen, but practical. Bigger island. Light colours. The floor will be light wood colours as it’s an open plan.
We still have time to change anything I would appreciate some ideas please 🙏😊

Can you turn the island 90°, double up the base units (back-to-back) and add an overhang on the long and short side? Gives you more storage and more seating.

These are 2 different designs done from different suppliers for a new kitchen. My current kitchen is totally different, the kitchen does need to go on that wall as it’s the best configuration of the total space. The hob on the island would need adequate extraction, The extraction rate i would need for the size of the open plan room would not be covered by a simple switch fan extractor and it’s not possible for an overhead one, with the integrated induction ones costing alot more. i have a dining table but thought it would be nice to have an alternative for breakfast working etc.. We are a family of 6. If I integrate the fridge and freezer would need two tall ones so would they look ok in the same place. I currently have 2 fridges and 2 freezers so that’s the reason I opted for AF. Can you suggest a new layout?

Trina, you asked "The front windows measuring from the sill are 75cm above the ground. Is this sufficient height for lower kitchen units? " Depending on the kitchen manufacturer, you can get lower units which will sit the worktop at around 75cm, though this is too low to use as "prep space" or to have a hob. But it can be done. We have in the past done worktops that sit a little higher than window level, and have left a smaller "shelf" at window level next to the window into which pots or small troughs for kitchen herbs were put, which can be a useful way to tackle this challenge.

Well it should be fine although it would be tight by the chimney breast so you’d need a “shorter” island. 380 width less 60 units less 90 island (incl 30 overhang for stools) leaves 230 walkway unless my maths is wrong? I’d go for 120 between units and island for DW opening and 110 the other side which is quite generous and a good working walkway. In terms of length of the island, you can probably go do down to about 1m gap between chimney and patio doors which gives an island length of 315 (although would reduce to 3m) again if my maths is correct!! It’s a very generous garage, we can’t fit a car in ours!

By all means ignore these ramblings…. wall between kitchen/dining room-gone; patio door in dining room-gone; erect a wall between dining room/living room… then the kitchen etc is installed in what is currently the dining room, the door into the current kitchen becomes a ‘door and a half’ with clear glazing, french doors installed where you currently have the kitchen sink again clear-glazed… so on entering the house and looking down the hallway from the front door you see clear-glazed ‘door and a half’ through to clear-glazed french doors through to your garden… so a larger room but swap over dining and working areas and bring your garden into the home….

Any idea if it would be okay if the island was the other angle going longer towards the dining area. The picture shows the entrance If it was longer island it would be visible through the glass door

For me it would depend on what your priority is. Is it to have a clear line of sight from the hall through to the garden or a more sociable space? Ask the kitchen designer to mock it up. We love our large island and only use the dining table at xmas now!

I agree with Vicki, is there enough floor space to make the island deeper? Ours is made from standard units one side and shallow units the other then an overhang. Loads of extra storage there.

If storage really is an issue would you consider moving your ovens to be under counter then you would gain the tall unit as a larder unit. We have a tall unit with pull out wire racks next to our tall fridge and freezer and is houses sooooooo much!
