help with colours
Hi, this is a small, dark (north facing) snug in a 1950's house. The room is used as a TV room, music room, occasional spare bedroom (that's a sofa bed). My family think the room is 'cool' and love the rug and the orange wall (F&B charlotte's locks) so they need to stay, but I would like to make the overall scheme to feel more balanced/less heavy; The inherited curtains are not right but I don't know what to choose instead - would a horizontal stripe (e.g. lelievre marina) improve the proportions or be too much? I might replace the coffee table with a curved glass topped one and the ceiling light with a more modern fitting. The sofa bed can be replaced or reupholstered. Any advice and ideas welcome!

I also found one of the french grey and agree it looks green so I am not doing my house in that either although it does look nice on windows with cream render! Comments (3)Ah, ok, so the panelling breaking up the walls should stop too much of a clash happening. That's great, thanks for that advice Kia. I do like the greys and neutrals so I'll go and get a couple of samples to try out. I do also like the sound of stripping back the panelling I think it would look amazing in that space but I suspect I'd have to carry it on through to the hallway which has acres of panelling and it might look a bit much, especially as I'm hoping to strip the floorboards in the hall back too. Comments (2)I think the teal is too bright for the room but appreciate that you would like to add some colour. A pale greeny grey would blend with the grey but add softness. What colour accessories are you planning to add? Farrow and Ball has some lovely shaded whites. Shadow White or one in that line of shaded whites. I always prefer colour added with towels and accesories like baskets as it's easy to change. I think you might do better with a warmer colour like Dimity or Setting Plaster (F&B) rather than a cold blue. A plant or two always looks great with grey....See More
3 years agoSuch a nice room. Velvet curtains in blue or orange would look stunning. Also I would paint the other walls orange as well to balance the room, or navy blue. The richness of one side of the room doesn’t quite suit the plainer side.
