Best ceiling light for kitchen when you can't have spots?

We have a loft kitchen living room and have two switches to use.. One will be lounge pendant and the other will be for the kitchen.
Trouble is it's old lathe and plaster ceiling which is papered so trying to avoid spot lights as harder to put in and not damage the ceiling apparently. (our electrician isn't keen to put them in so not an option)
So I'm looking for alternatives.
Was thinking of a spider light but light probably not bright enough and if I get brighter Bulbs then as they are bare, it will be too blinding 😂
Normal track seems a bit dull ie the straight ones but does anyone have any solutions?

Ps kitchen mock up in the one where the units are stepped won't be like that ie they will go straight across but it shows the ceiling shape so you can see its awkward!

Hi Tani,

I think track lighting would be your best bet for the kitchen area - but it has moved on significantly since the bulky ones you may remember :)

There are minimalist, highly customisable systems which would allow you to give just the right of lighting into the kitchen

Hi again. Your room is modern, contemporary and elegant and I'd definitely look to soften the look with a pendant light. I can estimate the size of your room and I agree with you, keep it simple and stylish. Quality, is your key here. Hi Claire, as Litecraft have already pointed out it does depend on what you are going to have in the rest of your kitchen but for me I would go with the Chrome option as think it will make your lights stand out more. If you want to go for something different to chrome there is also a satin nickel option too like this one which isn't as shiny as the chrome options like the one below. As the others have said, laying spotlights all over a ceiling just looks brash. They are best around the edges of the room, where the light bounces off walls and serves to give a nice glow, rather than an industrial glare. And I would absolutely advise keeping the central fitting on a separate circuit for a statement pendant - or at the least advise leaving the wiring for that there and hidden in the ceiling, for the potential for one in the future. Spots are massively overused - I have seen a load of period houses here in London made soulless by removing ceiling fittings and ambient lighting for a carpet of spotlights. spots are one aspect of a good lighting design, but should not light a room on their own - too harsh, too directional. I definitely like that you’ve gained a clear run from the hall way so you can see out to the back. I don’t think having the dining space diagonally really matters and as you say you gain extra light there. Also depends how much you use the table/living room/kitchen. I often Potter in the kitchen so would want that to be light enough to not always need to turn on lights, and often sit on the sofa and read so the same, but only eat evening meals at the table so it’s less of an issue, but if you use it all day, or have kids drawing there then you’ll have different priorities. I think if you can block off a small corner to create a utility cupboard that might be useful to help reduce noise in the open plan space. I think you could potentially do well discussing with a concept planner for the room. Many people on here have used OnePlan and recommend her. I think there are lots of options and everyone will have opinions of what works better but Presuming you’re doing this for you and not to sell then there’ll be additional considerations of your preferences and how you’d live in the space. :-)

I was also thinking of a track but with drop lights but wanted them with shades on so it wasn't blinding perhaps. I like those globe ones on that first link

The beauty of these is you can pick which lights you add - and have a few downlights for task work in kitchen + pendants.

When choosing the ceiling light for the living area just make sure it has some elements of black so the two tie together :)

You could have a lovely wall light on an arm to illuminate the dining table - could even be a plug in one they have come on in leaps and bounds!

Thank you, yes I was thinking of adding in some sockets nearby as the previous owner had one above the table in the old layout.

I just need to pick one for the main kitchen that will give enough working light now for cooking etc

I would look for a cooker hood that takes Halogen bulbs rather than LED ones. The difference is quite surprising. My sister has a hood with Halogens and they casts a warm pleasing ambient light whereas my new hood has cool LEDs that I dislike.

Also, recently we had a concrete ceiling ina. 1940s block that we renovated..They do some.beautiful ceiling mounted spotlights these days...

i can't have surface mounted ones really as it's all lathe and plaster ceiling so is going to be hard work. There is already a cable for a strip light so we can have one pendant or bar light in there which would light most of the kitchen run and then we have the hood for lighting over the hob which I always use.

And I'm going to try and get the light switch changed to a 3 way so I can have something over the table area separate (switched wall light hanging one) or as suggested, a plug in one I can hook over the table which would give softer lighting.

Would I be better handing the bar light in line with the oven ie in the walkway of the units and angling the lights towards the units rather than having it over the back kitchen run?
