Flooring scotia

Hi,

I just had laminate flooring put down, and the scotia installed is consistently shorter than the existing skirting. Is this the normal way to do this? It just looks odd to me, but I'm not an expert. See photo.

What bit is the problem? I don’t know scotia is I’m afraid.

I would say the white scotia either side of the door frame finishes too short and but not running up to door frame it draws your attention to it which is not what you want. I think it should go up to the door frame at least

It depends on your planned floor covering. If you are fitting a Ditra decoupling type membrane and and electric heat mat and using a 12mm tile it might be just about okay, if you are fitting a timber floor then it will need to be at least 18mm thick engineered wood with a decent underlay and you may still need a finishing Scotia. If you were planning to tile straight on top or fit a carpet or thin laminate type timber then it is too low. Your options are to fit levelling compound to bring it up to the required level or of you are planning to tile it your might consider raising the level with tile backing insulation boards which are not much more expensive that levelling compound per mm of built up and have the advantage of insulating your floor (even if you already have insulation bellow the screed it helps) Good Luck Terry www.onthetiles.biz

Thanks to all those persevering with me, or even just stopping by to see what's happening. I should probably confess that I don't intend to start anything until the New Year, except maybe some wallpaper stripping during the Christmas holiday, so that still leaves me 4 full months to 'perfect' any ideas that come my way. I'm also finding Floorplanner a little addictive. Far more entertaining for me than any of these premium computer games. If only enthusiasm and creativity came in equal measures. Thank you for those layout images Carolina. They have helped a little, if negatively. Seeing the vestibule size & shape, along with the way it changes the living room make me inclined to leave it as it currently is. Not only smaller, but it has, at least to me, a better look & feel. Another thought I had is that I'm unlikely to put any shelving in the larger alcove. I don't really have anything I could use shelves that size for. The small alcove would be ideal for some books & DVDs, but for the few I still have it would be enough. Plants wouldn't be an option either as the corner doesn't really get enough natural light. I'm still toying with the idea of having my computer desk in the smaller alcove. the main problem here is the gas & electric meters in the cupboard below. So far I'm working on two possible solutions, but if anyone has any thoughts on how, or even if I should do it, feel free to share them. My first idea was to have a desk (style to be decided) with the monitors on. I could have a pull out shelf underneath for the keyboard, similar to the one I have now. The meters would be housed in a small cupboard, though not much smaller than the current one, with the computer accessories on top of it. The second idea, which started from the earlier suggestion from Jenny, would be to just have a larger cupboard hiding most of it when not in use, and I just open the cupboard doors when using it. The second option is much better for legroom as, apart from the meters, there's plenty of space between them.

I think it has been poorly finished and should have been wiped or rubbed down with a wet cloth before it went off. That way it would not be visible on the surface and be under the skirting board What surprises me is why one thinks it is required on the front. If its a new skirting profile it should be chamfered on the back edge and the silicone applied to the rear of the board not the face. The compression would seal the gap and any silicone coming through would be wiped or cut away. If it is an existing skirting then there is little choice but to apply it on the front edge, but it should be wiped away from the face as its purpose, if any, is to seal the gap between the floor and the skirting If one looks back to Victorian and Edwardian times they managed very well without silicone sealants between floor boards and skirtings. The main function of a skirting with a timber floor is to cover the gap required at the edge of a floor to allow the timber to expand and contract during the differing climes of a year. Some may allude to the fact silicone has been used as a means to meet the new acoustic performances now required by the regulations but this can equally be achieved in other more aesthetically pleasing ways. Where it is not seen and by inserting compressible absorbent materials between the wall and the ends of the floor boards.

The Scotia has been finished correctly and does reach the door frame/architrave in the right place. The architraves are also under-cut as they should be.
