Comments (143)Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))...See MoreGarden Maintenance in March

Comments (84)Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? Earth Angel - Would you believe this is nine years old? Almost total shade, I'm surprised it's still healthy.

I have a few E's but unfortunately, only one picture of an E hosta. I loved the way my Elegans looked when it unfurled. But before I could take a photo, a cutworm got to it and Elegans was "holey" for the rest of the season. Darn.

2 years agoElegans, a lovely plant. We had such a hot, dry summer. My blues turned green by May and were a bit scorched by August. They went dormant early. Fingers crossed for this year, but expecting setback to less mature, smaller plants

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoYes, old_dirt I believe it. I've been fighting bacterial leaf rot on my 8-year-old Earth Angel and it is hanging in there. Maybe a sunnier spot would do it well.

Found this Eye of the Dragon hiding in another photo. Starting to show some promise after four years.
