I like the design. Very practical and a good use of the available space. Your alternative is to end the units where the peninsula starts and have an island instead. I think this might be too tight looking at the space. Its a very traditional layout so should have broad appeal. Think about how you would use it and how you live. Where is your dining table if you have one? An L shaped arrangement with or without island is another option.

I don’t like this layout and it appears to be about 2.6m wide so not big enough for an island. You should also satisfy yourself that the door to the free standing fridge will open as often they need extra space. Also if

It seems that the designer has prioritised having breakfast bar seating over having a practical kitchen and personally I don’t think the space allows the breakfast bar seating and a dining table with chairs. If the space to get past the peninsula is 1m then you likely have a 1.6m breakfast bar which is tight for three stools so you are going to need the dining table and room to get around it. Also by putting the breakfast bar right upto the patio door it makes it difficult to have a curtain over the door

The most hard working part of any kitchen is the area between the sink and hob and in this case it’s not a very big meal prep area reduced in size by being the obvious place for a microwave. I think that a U shaped kitchen arrangement would mean that the hob and fridge would be opposite the window and the space between the sink and hob would give a generous working area.

I always think if your stools are two or three steps away from the table then why have them at all? Good points about the layout Jonathan. Your alternative looks far better.

Isla - I agree with you about about not seeing much point in having the breakfast bar close to the dining table. An L shaped kitchen could be an option I just want to get as much counter space as possible and think I may lose some this way?

Jonathan- thanks so much, I really appreciate you doing visual plans this helps a lot. This does seem like a more functional/practical design. I also did not think about the fridge door space in the old design (especially when removing fridge shelves) being tight.

In your plan, the wall indents around the sofa on the play area where as the wall in my kitchen goes completely straight across (as in the first plan you sketched) .

Do you think the U - shape would still work? Do you see space for an integrated microwave, to save more countertop space?

One of your earlier posts shows that my plan is possible and the wall doesn’t go across. I suspect there is a beam high up because that’s the original back wall of the house but a fridge should fit under that.

I note one post discussed the possibility of extending. Is that still a possibility? If so consider widening the former kitchen

I've tried to erase the wall on the plan to show where the new wall starts (where the kitchen widens). So it's slightly smaller than it is on your plan.

Extending the kitchen to the side is unfortunately not possible as the space outside gets narrower at that part.

In fairness both layouts will have a similar amount of storage space but one will feel slightly small compared to the rest of the house. I say make your compromises in the utility not the kitchen

Although not very common people do have a WC and laundry space combined. Or you just use the WC upstairs as the previous occupant did.

I've had another company design what you've also suggested (attached) and I think it looks better than the initial design I posted. What do you think?

My only thought now is whether we'd be able to put the high cabinets on the partition wall. Do you know whether such walls weight bearing?

So you are saying that you have already put the wall up?

The kitchen you are planning here is worthy of a two bedroom house. To illustrate my point I went online to try and find a similar kitchen in a two bedroom house but found that they were all bigger.

If this house is your forever home then it’s fine to do something that’s right for only you. If it were me I would take the wall down before spending on a new kitchen.

It being open plan with the dining area helps create more space. So long as I have a good amount of countertop space (which is the case now) I'm content.😃
