Lou, from personal experience, the best paints for halls are those made for bathrooms and kitchens, as they are harder to scratch and wipe-able :)) Or that Diamond Tough from Dulux; you can also wash the walls painted in it - best even, buy the Trade Diamond. Our kitchen is painted in Dulux Pacific Breeze but nobody can tell, they think is white until they look at where the wall meets the ceiling. Oops i forgot to mention it's to be a ceiling extractor! This is the closest i have found so far, and my suggestion on this was to perhaps not wire in the lights, or to remove the bulbs, but client wasn't keen on just having frosted panels with no lights in.

The kitchen extension is obviously vastly better, but comes at a cost as you say. I would consider things like how big your garden is, how long you will stay in the property, and ceiling price of the street. Personally if you decide not to extend, I would have the kitchen diner at the back (knock through the current wall), keep the front half of the garage for storage and resale, then convert the back to either a utility/shower room OR knock it through to enlarge the kitchen further.
