Small island seating min sizes?

Hello,
If we had a small floating island in our flat that just had a 600 base unit at the front middle and then had 300mm either side and across the back, would that be supportive enough and give seating for 2 across the back run and one person at either end??
It's the main seating in a small apartment but I also needed the extra kitchen unit for drawers as can't fit any in the layout design.
The worktop would be 900 deep then by 1200 wide.
What do you think?

Doesn't sound very sturdy (nor pretty) even when bolted to the floor. Are you replacing the kitchen? Please post a floorplan with measurements.

I agree with many of the comments on here in that if they really work in the space you have then why not? However they don't work for every space and other ideas can make the kitchen easier to work within and still have an impact. In our kitchen a peninsular worked best. It is 90 cm wide so I have kitchen units one side and on the dining side I have a long shelf for all my cookery books, drawers underneath that, and a cabinet for our water softener. There is an overhang at one end with stools for 2 people. I could have fitted an island in, but it would have ended up much smaller and less useful than the peninsular, with less storage.

Mine was an 800 before I removed the glass - the main fan section is smaller of course so I presume that it’s the actual canopy that makes the difference ie if the extractor canopy is 800 with an 800 hob then most of the steam that rises, should hit the top of the canopy and be drawn towards the extractor. Even though we removed the glass on ours, it will be set into a suspended wood canopy so in effect, the steam should do the same thing. I’m told induction hobs are super steamy, ha ha. We got a Neff extractor which is also v quiet so hoping it does the trick!

A couple of thoughts on the design that may help you replan...... There seems to be very little counter space between your hob and sink, once you set dirty dishes on one side and clean on the other, where will you prep? Perhaps you could put the hob in your island? Or move it or the sink to the other wall? It’s worth considering a change from your wall oven to fitting one (or two) under the counter one. You’ll get back the worktop space, and thus could easily move your fridge next to the pantry. We opted for two full size Neff slide and hide door ovens under our counters , one regular oven, one steam oven, with our hob directly above them and it’s one of the best decisions I made. I have the ergonomic and space benefits of a range cooker, but superior capacity and functionality for my needs. An induction hob not only looks sleeker, but effectively gains you work space too. You can stick a cookbook / chopping board/ etc directly next to your pot while cooking and it will be fine. Karen from One Plan is terrific and will draw you a proper well thought out plan. Alternatively a virtual planning appointment with Ikea will also result in a plan, and unlike Howdens, an actual price, too. Both companies work in standard cm dimensions....a 40cm wide cabinet is a 40cm cabinet is a 40cm cabinet. (One difference is depth and height.... Ikea units are a little bit deeper, and a little bit taller, so they have a little bit more capacity). Hope that helps.

If the room is big enough then i'd design the island with shallow depth units on the back and then an overhang (i always use dummy drawer line units for these especially if its a handleless door style so you can open the doors) and that would keep the island in proportion and not look to narrow (like it is now). But this also depends on the worktop you've chosen, as you have a howdens plan you are going to be limited to what howdens can supply and that might be why the howdens 'designer'/salesperson has designed the island like it is. You could start adding 300 units at each end, but you'd lose one seating position, the other option may be to have 'downstands' where the worktop carries on down to the floor, again depending on your worktop it may need to be a mitred joint, especially if you have a grain/pattern/edge profile. Even then if the room is big enough i'd still have shallow depth units for the extra storage and to make a real statement of the island also have the downstands, lots of quartz worktops are in jumbo sizes and these are 1400mm wide so your island could be upto 2400x1400 so you could easily have the post in the middle with a bit of careful planning.

Hi Rinked! It's Tani here but from my phone I can only log in with a new account, DOH.

It would have had a 600 unit at the front centre so would have been fine sturdyiness wise but we decided we didn't really like it and have just gone with a peninsular which seats 3 across the back and one at the end I think. It's not ideal for dining space in a flat (holiday let to start with) BUT, it's a small open plan room and the peninsula offers way more versality for the kitchen in future ie with putting a full size freezer or washer dryer in etc so something has to be sacrificed, haha.

Gosh, I didn't think I had offended anyone by my posts :o( - not sure why you feel that way. Did I not agree with some advice you gave me?

I always have listened to advice but I have 4 kitchens to do so each one has different specs and requirements and they aren't all the same flat.

Also I only posted this to ask advice re sizing space as I had to make a decision yesterday with which option to go with as the electrican was putting all the wiring in ready. But as you said - it looked ugly so I scrapped that idea.

I forgive you, no problem whatsoever, the house is yours and all decisions are too :)

A bar table would look better than a 60cm unit with a table top though.

Yes i'm going to go with a bar table so it will also fit extra appliances under for future that someone had suggested ie washer dryer or freezer.

Oh noooo! @Sarah L - i had to bed admin to let me sign back up and that it wasn't me sending any dodgy messages as I said I had been on this platform for years and never messaged anyone if they could check my e-mail box! lol. I'm not a company either so have no need. Someone must have got all our details but it's annoying as I lost all my albums as well so feel your pain. I wasn't even told I had been shutdown either !! no courtesy.
