flooring: easy to replace if damaged

Hi my husband and I getting an extension and we need to choose a cheaper flooring than our desired £21.99 sqm herringbone laminate (click system) as the builder has advised against this as if one plank gets damaged it’s very difficult to replace just that one. He suggested Karndean but that is way over budget.

Any guidance on cheaper (but still good quality) flooring that is easier to replace should it chip/damage? The builder also said it is more expensive to lay herringbone style so we will go straight planks.

I’ve got a cheap and cheerful laminate in my living room. It’s been down over 10 years and it has never been damaged or chipped. It was a temporary measure until we could afford a wooden floor but we’ve not changed it yet as it still looks good. It was from Topps Tiles and was about £8.99 a square metre, but of course that was 10 years ago. I would imagine if a board is damaged it could be lifted and replaced but I’ve never tried. You can just see the flooring in this picture.

Sounds a bit like the builder is trying to make life easier for themselves to me. I am one of life's worriers and flooring longevity is important BUT I have also come to realise that it may never happen and often it doesn't. Have what you want and what makes you happy. You have to be pretty brutal to damage laminate enough to want to remove a plank.

I know this sounds crazy but heating it up might help. Someone heat damaged my brand new dining table so I looked up tips on line. Heating it with a hairdryer worked, mark disappeared completely. Other suggestions included an iron but I didn't need to go that far so wouldn't recommend that! Basically the aim is to heat the mark up so the trapped water can escape.

Hi, you can get professionals to clean and seal your stone. You can also do it yourself, but I'd presume the professional clean would be better. I've sealed my own stone tiles and it was very easy. A simple wipe on then off process. From what I understand your stone is uneven surface. From that I think you can't put flooring on top without leveling it out. And considering it doesn't cover all the floor, I'd remove it if you were planning a new floor finish. But if your not fussed for the floor, and watching your budget, and plan to replace it at some stage, I'd get my DIY on with some stone cleaner and sealer.

There will always be damage to skirting boards when they are removed. The extent of damage largely depends on how they were fixed in the first place. You'll need some wood filler and caulk to repair them before painting. My skirting boards usually come off in a worse state than yours, so I always replace mine.

There is an open plan room in my apartment that serves as the kitchen and dining/living room. Currently the kitchen zone has tile floors and the dining/living zone have 16mm engineered wood floors. The entire room has underfloor heating but it is split into two zones. I've decided to update the kitchen and have the same floors throughout the room. The current floors are 15+ years old so the wood has a few scratches and some dark damaged bits. I don't know if it would be better to refinish the existing wooden floor zone and then just add a colour matched new wooden floor in the kitchen zone or to replace the whole lot. Any advice?
