If you want your mirror to stand out or to create more of a feature why don't you paint the middle third of the wall a deep navy, darkish but warm grey or even a darker shade colour of your chest of drawers? Will make your fireplace & stove & mirror stand out. This will give it a bit more structure and depth.. but am liking it. Any finished pictures?

Hi Charlotte, I would suggest putting a large framed print on the wall above the sofa and use this as the art focal point in the room, making use of that nice big space. On the wall next to the door I would put two smaller framed pieces that compliment the larger piece but are more subtle. Then above the fireplace you don't need another piece of art, instead a mirror would be perfect. Its unlikely anything you hang will get damaged because its indirect heat. That said you could use tin foil to back the art and use pin nails in each corner to 'lift' the piece from the wall slightly (so it appears to float a little). Usually the majority of the heat comes from the fire/stove itself rather than through the chimney - installing a mantle of some kind (if there's not one in place already) will cut the heat dramatically in the area above.
