I can’t claim credit as the previous owners designed it but I love our kitchen - lighting obviously wasn’t expensive but the oversized lampshade over the dining table helps to frame it perfectly. We also have two wall lights on the wall on the right over the range.

I would look for a statement lighting design to have over the dining table. The danish do fantastic designs, but there are budget ones available too. I would also consider wall lights. There are some beautiful examples available. Original BTC has some porcelain shaded ones called Hector. Quite a classical style which would never date. Consider task lighting for your kitchen. It will also help with maintenance as a lot of lights are hung too high to reach for cleaning. Industville has an amazing selection of wall lights and pendants. An idea of your overall look would help with the advice. Are you renovating the kitchen?

The problem with the kitchen is that there is a lack of natural light. The side windows look onto the neighbours wall. I'm concerned now without spots it will be really dark. I like Jen S's idea but how are you lighting your work spaces? Lovely kitchen BTW.

It’s not a great photo but here’s the kitchen the other way round - we’ve since added a floor lamp and an up lighter on top of the fridge by the range. My husband is obsessed with creating warm light everywhere (and hates spotlights). We never have a problem seeing what we’re doing and I don’t miss spotlights at all!

You have some really wonderful ceiling height, I specialise in period homes so I know that tricky they can be.

A great alternative to spots would be something like the image attached, they so look big at first, but so much of design is about scale and if you add some gorgeous pendant lighting over the island and these would be your ambient lighting it would would really work, for the scale of the room. I also love that you can be flexible on the direction that they point, so you can be really intentional with your lighting.
