Bathroom Layout questions

Good morning, I am in the middle of renovation and suddenly many, many things need sorting out and designing and my mind is full! On our middle floor we have a family bathroom. It’s a newly created space (unfortunately no window at the moment, hopefully in the future on the wall opposite the door but this needn’t be considered at the moment). This bathroom caters for 5 children (0-8yrs) so needs a bath as well as a good size shower, sink and toilet. Busy toothbrushing times would benefit from a waive sink if possible. Shower could be separated from the rest of the room by sudd walls or shower enclosure. I realise it may be a little squashed with a large shower tray too (in my mind, 800/900x 1000 but open to change) but I’d love to see/ hear what suggestions you have. Rooms dims are 1835x3153. The wall opposite the door is an external wall with where drainage will be.

It looks tight but I cannot see your dimensions clearly. You need minimum 70cm bath, 20cm gap, 60cm sink, 20cm gap, 40cm loo, 20cm gap, 80cm shower. i think double sinks and a shower attachment with a bath screen for an over the bath shower might be more useful to you with 5 children under the age of 8. What is the bathroom usage as far as how many are at school, peak times etc. Do they all have to bath or shower at night? Is there another bathroom to help with peak times? Do any of them bath together? What are the exact ages as toddlers needs are different to 8 year olds. Do you have another single toilet with WHB?

We are still working on our new house, there is currently a bath with a glass half screen that is totally useless. The water bounces off whoever is showering past the screen and over the toilet, the floor, the ceiling, and it's only a half tiled wall so the wallpaper is peeling. I've considered the P or d shaped baths which give a larger section at one end in which to stand when using the shower and I've seen there are matching curved glass screens to go with them. Two points to consider. 1. If you are not planning on staying a shower could be a good selling point, the water saving of a shower versus a bath. Our last bath hardly saw a look in during 16 years and although it was a lovely deep double ended steel bath it gathered dust and the shower was definately the go-to choice. 2. I am now considering the usability of the bathroom for an elderly relative who has had a stroke, likes baths, but may not be able to get into, or out of one, with dignity intact. I'm thinking that a large walk in shower with additional wall jets could be a good option and the upscale could be a wow factor. Although you may not be in the same position you can never have enough forward planning.

Get the architect to move that window to the middle and swap the basin & wc around. Most people are right handed so having the basin next to the wall on that side won't lead to banging elbows on the wall whilst doing teeth and also gives you a bit more leeway with space around the wc. It will also mean any shower screen you might have over the bath won't crash into the basin. (On that front take a look at Simpsons Design dual inward folding screen.)

Hi, you don't give the dimensions of the room but it looks a good size with plenty of options. I'm guessing approx 2m x 3.4m? There are a couple of layouts I could see working: 1). Leave the wc where it is, put the bath with shower over in the corner where the sink is now and have a lovely vanity unit where the bath is at the moment. 2) again, leaving the wc where it is, put a shower in the corner where the basin is currently, a slightly smaller but deeper freestanding tub in the middle of that long wall, and a smaller vanity as you come in the door. The shower I'm thinking of is just a slim tray with an 'easy access' screen - one of those with a flipper on the end.. The sketches are not to scale but give a better idea of what I'm suggesting. Both Hansgrohe and (Friedrich) Grohe are German companies; Friedrich was a son of Hans who went on his own in the 1930s, so they share a certain heritage. These days, Grohe is larger and no longer family owned. Both produce outside Germany as well as on their original German sites still. Both produce "basic" and "high-end" ranges. They're both regarded well back home in Germany, much of the choice is down to personal preference. Hansgrohe is on average slightly more expensive (but not on everything). They also own the Axor design brand which has a more "ecletic" selection. One can mix-and-match; in our bath (bit messy, sorry - we're using it for the washing up while waiting for the kitchen to be installed), the mixer is Grohe as is the shower wall outlet, the shower rail and head shower arm (just above the shower screen) are Hansgrohe pieces. At least the chromed finishes are very close for the two: Both can be sourced well below retail list prices - if you're prepared to wait, German online sellers for bathroom goods tend to have many-months delivery timelines. For Grohe essentials (the classical Grotherm mixers) at least, any German DIY shop stocks these at very attractive prices (the difference to the UK retail price list will pay for the ferry ticket and fuel).

A double sink will be about 120cm. Too large for your space if you have the separate shower and bath. My sister has an extra wide sink which measures 100cm which may be useful for a few children to congregate around but only one tap.

I think with kids and in this shape room a bath/shower space like this works really well. They can splash as much as they like without creating a mess.

I think just a couple of tweaks to your plan. Swap the loo and the sink - loo is then a better spot for overseeing bathtime and then you can change to a quadrant shower which shouldn't feel squashed. Also means you wouldn't have a shower door that could be hit with the room door.

If it were me, I'd put a second shallow sink at a lower height opposite the main sink / loo with the intention of removing it when outgrown / selling up. There are some very small cloakroom sinks out there that could look cute as an obvious child sink.
