This is quite easy to do. Remove the knobs, give it a light sand down and then choose a colour you like in either an eggshell or chalk paint depending on the finish you want. I've painted a few bits of wooden and melamine furniture in chalk paint now (rustolium, which is a bit cheaper than Annie Sloan) and have found it really easy to work with. New England suggests a pale colour to me - white, cream, light grey or blue - and you could also distress the finish. I picked it up from online tutorials :)

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. There’s some real effort in the advice and I really appreciate it. I think I’m going to leave the sideboard as it is. Paint the wall, either grey or a deep blue, and add a lamp, plant/ terrarium - possibly a few bottles of gin (for show Ofcourse). If I remember, once I’ve done it - I’ll add a picture and share it. In which case, there's no reason why you can't strip it back and stain or varnish it. I believe you have a couple of options (I can't think of any other ways) sand it all down, which may or may not be practical or the alternative is to chemically remove the paint. You can buy various products to do it at home, one I've had success with in the past is Kling Strip, which is a paste poultice thing. Or there are various other solvents etc that will also either soften or melt the current paint to make it easier to scrape back. But most chemical options can prove to be messy in varying degrees and often require an amount of washing down. There is also commercial dipping available. This is typically offered for doors, but I'm sure you could find someone who would be able to do a piece of furniture. Once it's stripped, a quick all over sand to smooth and then you're ready to stain or varnish.

The STRING system is nice but unfortunately the widest module is 80cm, it will definitely not work with a TV. The main thing to keep in mind is that in your case the system should not be chosen in the color of natural wood. Black or white.
