Dormer window curtains

Hi!

We have a very deep dormer window in a loft of a Victorian mid-terrace property.

Great views but no privacy. Looking for any ideas for how to mount curtains or any other solution. We were quoted for shutters but they were extremely expensive and would jut out awkwardly into the dormer space.

We’re not keen on little ‘triangular shaped curtains either which is what other properties have done.

How about white wooden slatted blinds? Look a bit like shutters but considerably cheaper. As it’s a complex window arrangement I would get a blind company to come in and measure and quote. You can get blinds from Blinds2Go who are vertical reasonable, but getting the measurements correct can be a bit of an ordeal. I’ll try and find a picture.

Thanks for the idea! I’ve seen those in a square shape but do you think it would be possible for them to be made so they taper in line with the triangular shape of the side window?

A roller blind is probably the best option in this case as the side walls are sometimes not long enough to accommodate a dormer rods which are really only OK for cottage windows. You could try a slimline pelmet from The Pelmet Company. Pole Design can supply these and will give you assistance on sizes. You could also use a roman blind with small pockets spacings if you don't want to much light block when pulled up. See below which looks rather smart. Pelmet from Pole Design

Hi Susan, Dormer windows can seem tricky to dress, but here you have the added advantage of a little space above your window, which I presume will still partially exist after the renovation. Depending on the type of room, Roman blinds are a lovely luxurious choice. Shutters can also be made to fit dormer windows which make them a really neat, stylish feature. Generally, curtains are best avoided at a dormer window, as they can swamp the space and block out too much light. If you're fitting blinds, lots of people like to fit the headrail slightly above the window to make the most of the light. E.g. for a Roman blind, if you fit it slightly above, when pulled up the folds will cover less of the window for maximum light. Hope that helps, Zoe

Hello, if you want the dormer to go the full width of the roof/ bungalow then that is a dormer loft conversion and you'll need architect plans, structural engineer calculations, planning permission as you are making changes to the front of your house...this can take weeks. I've just had mine done under permitted development but my dormer is at the back of the house and the builder said 6-8 weeks for the build itself. It only took 3 weeks to build the dormer structure but a few extra weeks to do the internal works, electrics, plastering, bathroom etc. If you get a building company that does lofts day in day out, they will be quicker and than someone that only does the odd loft now and again. Best thing to do is to drive around your area, see if there are similar projects going on and ask the owners they recommend the company carrying out the works, get some quotes in.

I agree. Match to the slate, then they will disappear. If they were the green they would jump out at you and I don't think that would look right.

I’ve found a few pictures but not the best I’ve seen. I’m not sure curtains would look right as it’s such an unusual shape?

Thank you! Yes agree the curtains might look a bit strange.

We had someone come out to look at plantation style shutters but the issue was because there’s no recess the frame would stick a couple of inches out into the space which might look a bit strange
