We are purchasing this 1930’s house but would like to improve the exterior decor to a brighter look and feel. Perhaps a 1930’s style door. The porch was a new addition, keep or go?
I would keep the porch, it's so useful. A 1930's style door to modern standards would look a lot better than the very modern addition that is currently in place. Some of your pebbledash appears to be white or cream. I would paint the rest to match. A matching pair of much larger plants like bay trees if it is sunny enough would also lift the appearance.
Shame about the missing arch, but I think a period style door would look much nicer. Most door companies sell 1930s style doors as per the examples above and they do look lovely. Your porch is nice.
To enhance the exterior of your 1930s house and achieve a brighter, period-appropriate look, consider the following updates:
Front Door
A 1930s-style front door would significantly improve the period character of your home. Traditional designs often feature hardwood or composite materials with geometric glass panels and bold, vertical lines typical of Art Deco influences. Several UK-based options are available:
Period Home Style offers bespoke hardwood doors with optional stained or etched glass panels, designed to replicate authentic period aesthetics.
Value Doors UK provides composite doors that can be customized online and are available with nationwide fitting. These doors include modern security features while retaining a period look.
Porch
The existing porch could be adapted to align better with 1930s architecture. A simplified pitched roof or a more angular Art Deco-style canopy with subtle detailing would harmonize well. If the current porch feels out of place, removing it could restore the clean, symmetrical lines typical of the era.
Additional Exterior Enhancements
Brickwork and Render: Refreshing the render in a soft, neutral tone such as off-white or pale grey can brighten the facade while keeping it elegant. Brick areas could be cleaned and repointed for a polished look.
Windows: Update the window frames with slim, white frames and add period-style leaded or crittall-style glazing for authenticity.
Accents: Use black or dark grey for elements like window ledges, roof fascia, and porch details to echo 1930s colour palettes.
