Courtyard or Skylight?
Hi all! We're debating which layout to pick for our 1bed victorian ground floor flat. We're planning a side return extension, but we're not sure if we should add a a courtyard. I'm concern of resell value if we have a bedroom with no conventional window.
Options:
A. Glass doors from bedroom to hallway with a skylight
B. Knock the whole wall with a skylight
C. Courtyard with a glass door
Maybe we're missing some other ideas?

Comments (11)Courtyard- often the cost of moving drains is prohibitively high and a courtyard does get light in to the center of your home and lots of people don’t like high up window in a bedroom plus they have to be a certain size for regulations that often doesn’t fit the available space. Comments (20)Hi Carolina, Sorry my comment wasn't meant as a come back! I was just addressing the points you mentioned. Both views i.e. "to open plan or not to open plan" have been around for a while and I think the conclusion of the debate is that it really depends on how you use your home, what features are important to you and what sacrifices you're willing to make. I'm slowly helping my parents to go open plan. Initially they were not too keen but so far they are loving it. I built them a utility room to separate the noisy appliances. I removed the door between the kitchen and dining room and and the one from the kitchen to the hall. My mum thinks it great as she's always wiping down the doors and as she gets older they are getting harder for her to do. Next up removing the wall between the two rooms and then wall between the living room and the hall. This will make the whole downstairs very accessible for them as well as appliances such as robo vacs and so future proofed for them. So the pros are working out better than the cons for them, but as mentioned everyone uses their house in a different way....See More

Thank you guys for your thoughts! Unfortunately we decided not to move the bedroom to the front, so we can have a more traditional living room. Though we know that bathroom in the kitchen is not ideal setup too.
So after further discussions, we are now leaning towards a covered courtyard where we will have a full sized skylight, with plants etc making it look more outdoors (think Japanese zen garden). But we will include doors leading to the bathroom too, so there's a cozy and warm connection between bedroom and bathroom.
Here's a shoddy sketch I've made. What do you think?
