Dilemma!! Sofa design….

Hi all! Really stuck with the layout of my lounge and what sofa design / style to have. The back wall is 5m and the window wall to the media wall is 3m. I thought I wanted a corner but feels it could be a bit too long and weird! Thoughts welcome please!

You can either use 3 seater sofa with 2 side table on the long wall and 2 seater on window wall

Sukiharrison and Odd job Hadyman, Thank you very much for your comments :) We actually intended to have the sofa on the opposite wall and built in cabinets and shelves exactly like you've suggested but I absolutely loved this big L shape sofa so desided to have it as it is now. There is no problem to move one part of the sofa to the opposite wall and the other to the wall against the window, but for now this is more convenient lay out. The shelves have to wait for now but I imagine them in white. After hearing a few suggestions about the secondary light by the window I will probably listen to the pros and remove it In favour of a floor or table lamp. No curtains.. For now :) I have a big thing about dust and would like this house to be as easy to clean as possible and generally don't like curtails Over radiators. Thou I understand this will affect the appearance I'd like to keep it simple.

Poor kitty. Do take her to the vets and get her checked out. As for the rug I was looking a while back how to clean wool needlepoint (got a couple of antique chairs with needlepoint seats) and seems that a sensitive fabric cleaner is mostly used for tapestry’s, rugs etc. Woolite is easily available and there are some good reviews on Eucalan. Both need to be spot cleaned (dab on , dab off) and don’t use water especially warm water as this will make the colours run. Might be worth a try before the expense of a professional clean. I haven’t cleaned my seats yet so couldn’t say if it works but there are plenty of ‘how to’ videos on you tube.

As a vague vision, (can help on detail if you think ok In principle) Ideally I’d reclaim the annexe for play/music/ kids room and annexe bed add ensuite as use for students. Turn cloak room to downstairs loo access from hall. current student bed into cloak/boots storage and utility. Open up current utility to access new cloak room and if you need extra kitchen space could put larder where wash machine etc is at moment, I would avoid too much wall movement as expensive assuming you need to save the money for new chalet in garden (friend achieved chalet style for around £65-70k). If you have budget I would certainly extend upstairs one side of house to make use of eades and up to full height so you could have as a minimum bunk bed arrangement or 2beds depending ages of your children. Pending budget could look into whether can get another bedroom up there. Obviously this is just a vision would need more detail to confirm, hope you can see mark up on plan attached

Hello,

It looks like it is a pretty long and narrow room. I would be happy to help you out with the layout if you give me some dimmensions.

Does the long wall include the doors (purple line) or not (red line)?

How wide are the shelves (yellow line) close to the windows?

How wide is the fireplace (green line)?

Hom much space will there be left between the wall on the left and the fireplace (blue line) once it has been installed?

Based on these I will create some layouts for you :)

Thanks so much all for responding!! Jarek, thank you, to answer your questions:

Red line is 5.1m
Purple like is 6.8m - we have a bit of wall behind the door!
Yellow line is close to the window, about 15cm gap between the ledge and shelf. The shelf is about 2.5m in length, and that’s the same the other side of the TV too
Green line (fireplace) is 1.93m
For the blue line, the fireplace is staying as is (as in its distance, it’s being stone cladded!) and floor tiles are in place, distance from that to the wall is 3m

Hello again,

I had a play with some layout ideas.

Here's what I came up with:

1) In this room layout I've used a straight sofa design (250cm wide). Assuming the room will me mainly used for TV you need a sofa opposite it for the best viewing experience.

This big sofa should be enough to comfortably sit 3 grown-ups.

I've places a smaller curved sofa by the windows so it provides aditional seating space as well as visually shortening the room. There is a floor lamp next to it so it can be a nice cosy space for lounging or reading a book.

On the other side of the room there's an armchair with a side table and another floor lamp. I've placed an oversized artwork/a mirror on the bottom wall to fill it up and create a bit of interest there.

2) In this layout I've used a long sofa - this one is 360cm wide. This would create a more strimlined space by accentuating the shape of the room.

Two armchairs either end of the room provide additional seating as well as add variety to a space dominated by straight lines.

3) In this layout I have created the L shape sofa using modular units 100x100cm. It's not a chaise longue sofa - I think you need that short part by the windows to have backrests so it kind of 'holds the room together' visually. It also is more practical to have an actual seat rather than just somewhere to put your feet up.

(There's floor space for a small footstool left should you need it.)

In all of these ideas I've used wall lights behind the sofa to add more mood and visually break up the wall. These can be plugged in if you are not keen in adding fixed wall lights.

I also used an organic shaped coffee table, curved armchairs and round side tables to softer the look of your room. It is a long room with the tv wall full of strong lines - the way to softer it is by choosing round and curved shapes.

I think each of this layouts could work well for you depending on how you want to use the space. Think about film night; maybe a match day? When you entertain, and when you are by yourself with a cup of tea - which option gives you the most use of this room?
