Can we see more of the floor. I’ll show hubby tonight as this is something that he will know about. Is the floor pre finished, or did you add a lacquer because sometimes that will change the original timber colour.

Yes, but design-wise i wonder if it is better to have a smaller one and fill the gap with wood floor? Or we could go for a large hearth to fill the gap? Wondering what would be better? And if we can't match the wood then we need another solution.

It’s difficult to tell from the photos because they appear as different colours. It looks like what they used to call Merbau but not sure if it’s still available. The other possible options are to contact a specialist timber company and ask them to attend because photos are misleading.

We have a local specialist timber company in Atherstone, Warwickshire who are called George Sykes. Hubby has suggested sending the photos to them to see if they can assist.

Personally, I’d replace the hearth with a similar size that you had and incorporate on the hearth a logstorage area (ideally specifically designed for the space) on one side and a statement companion set on the other side. Note that you’re fireplace looks like it should be able to knock out wider which will show the stove off better, a set of lights inside the opening would look great too, especially if you clad the interior chamber with a similar material as you use on the chimney face, something that goes with a darker hearth colouring. The lights make the opening a cosy looking feature in the summer even when You’re not using the stove.

Matching that wood floor will be a nightmare if you don't know the species. I'd just do a new hearth in slate or stone instead. It looks better with a stove anyway and covers the gap perfectly.
