Hi @lonely_lawnmower - at the moment - no - it's so messy and we didn't actually finish round there (two young kids / lost motivation) Haha. We still need to fill and paint the wardrobes as we re-used old PAX in a bit of a hack to create them. Did you look at the stories on my insta page - there's one called Loft and the last image is pretty much how it is except I have carpet and a desk at the end now. Things I'd change now we've lived with it for a few years - I'd put a pocket door between the bedroom area and walk in wardrobes (as our loft gets cold on that side and you feel it in winter (even with the insulation). Also open wardrobes and the apex windows are a consideration with moths and sunlight fading clothes. Also I said above - I wouldn't go for doors in the dormer again - but a large window instead. Hi Rose, I would recommend talking to a structural engineer. "As far as i know..." is not a good approach when talking about something that could be holding up your house! Reminds me of a story I once heard... A few years ago a builder I met told me of lady he was standing behind in a builders merchants. She was asking a staff member about metal brackets but seemed confused about what she actually wanted, so he stepped in and asked her to describe what she wanted them for. She said that there were bits of wood clogging up the space in her loft so she had started cut them out and was looking for brackets to somehow hold the remaining bits together! Anyway being as shocked as he was he asked if anyone was still in the house and if there was she had to call them and tell them to get out! He went back to house with her and showed her that that her roof was already starting to bow in the middle. She had started cutting out the trusses holding up her roof! She didn't think they were too important because she thought they were too thin! She was still not really aware of how bad things were and asked if him he could fix it! Anyway a few structural surveys, scaffolding and many thousands of pounds later she had learnt the "As far I know" can't be applied to somethings in life.

Personally I would have the master bedroom in this space on the 1st floor- after all the footprint is bigger and the ceiling height is likely better. There is enough room in the loft for two kids bedrooms- when they start paying the mortgage they can argue for the best bedroom space but right now you should have it.

Hi! This is a long a complex post! It's hard to know exactly what your question is. If you are looking for help with the layout design then this is something that I can help you with. For the technical questions relating to structural design then yes, as you say, these are best answered by a structural engineer. Getting the layout right for you first and then speaking to the engineer is usually the process that I would go through. I always start off with looking at what it is you want to achieve from the additional space you create. I would also look at upgrading the thermal performance of the roof since you will need to recover the roof anyway. You will need to add in insulation anyway but there are ways of doing it that is much more effective and there are some serious errors that are commonly made that you need to avoid - like cutting holes in the insulation to install inset downlights.
