Looking for specific brand in line duct fan to assist in pushing air upstairs in old home. Can these be found that connect to the furnace that only runs when the furnace runs? Brands that are good?

Your air flow problem is likely due to undersized duct work. An in line booster fan may help. I suggest you consider buying a register booster fan which replaces the existing register. Here is the one I bought 3 years ago on Amazon: AC Infinity AIRTAP T4 White, Register Booster Fan for 4” x 10” Register

The fan can be programmed to turn on when the air coming out of the register is above a set temperaure for heating, and below a set temperature for cooling. The latest version can be programmed with the company's app via bluetooth. The motor speed is also programmable so it can be set low for a bedroom.The nice thing about it is the fan will continue to push out air even when the furnace has turned off but the air in the duct is still warm.

I have a heating/cooling guy that is going to re-route the duct work directly from tje furnace to hopefully also push up more air. He had only given me one blower from a company that he had used on someone else's house but I saw that it didn't have very good reviews so I was looking for a better alternative. My question was also if this booster fan could be connected to the furnace so that it would only turn on when the furnace kicked in.

We have a ceiling mounted extractor in a very large room and it works really well. We ended up with a Brittania BEST extractor (bought from John Lewis) simply because we have a structural steel running above and the position of the internal ducting fit best with that model, though it's a bit bigger than we ideally wanted. The slightly lowered section of ceiling around the extractor is also because of the steel and wouldn't otherwise have been needed. extraction comes under part F of building regs, so your architect should be detailing this in the plans for the extension. As i understand part F the important bit is Part F When inserting or removing an internal wall, care should be taken not to make ventilation worse. Any new kitchen, a toilet with no openable window; a bath/shower room or utility room should be provided with a mechanical extract fan. The type of room will determine how much ventilation is required. Part F says that where a kitchen previously had only a recirculating fan this can be retained/replaced if it is made no worse. However, I would always recommend fitting an extractor to deal with condensation. • Kitchen: 30l/s if over the hob and 60l/s if placed elsewhere so you could have an expelair type extractor on an external wall that will comply with regs at a minimum.

Don't get me started on extractor fans, I've had a miserable time picking the right one for the job over the years, so let me save you some hassle and tell you this is the best solution for the balance between air extraction and quiet operation. Hi Melissa, Jus read through your post and as you said you are getting a new hob (I was pleased you said Induction as this changes the game) you could get a vented Induction Hob. Most of the main brands sell them - Siemens, Neff & Miele so you are in luck. You could then pop some nice lighting under the chimney just so you boost light and look at putting in an external vent/other ventilation somewhere else in the room where an external wall is available. Vented hobs are becoming an extremely popular choice due to lack of space and the minimalist living look. They are also a fantastic option when you are limited on space but still need extraction. Yes the fan could be wired to turn on when the furnace turns on. Another method is to install a sail switch in the duct. The sail switch turnns on the fan when it detects air flow from the furnace.

If the duct will be rerouted then does the HVAC contractor still think an inline booster fan is needed?

He thought it MAY help push air up, uncertain. Old home, no return air upstairs. But he thought the booster fan would run continuously, not to my liking for an electric bill if they use alot of energy. Do they all run continuously unless wired not to?? Hense, i was looking for recommendations of good ones that is energy efficient that may actually last.

You should not install a fan which will run continously. It will waste energy, create unnecessary noise, and have a shorter life. The control of the fan is a separate item. I am suspicious of a HVAC contractor who does not know how to control an inline booster fan.
