If I were you I would keep to a fairly simple shape like a drum e.g http://www.pagazzi.com/shop-for-lighting/ceiling-lights/davis-extra-large-pendant-silver.html I can't tell from your photos whether a warmer colour would go better but the shape won't detract from the wall paper on the chimney Brest and ties in with the fairly simple mantle but a larger size will stop it blending into the background. Then you can add a bit more interest with your cabinet lighting etc.

I personally would not use any brand of eggshell paint on a kitchen cupboard, it is not robust enough for the job. Gloss or satinwood is what you should be looking at. I've always used Dulux, but have recently defected to Valspar ( crown ) at B&Q due to issues with colour mixing, colour matching. We have just painted our utility room using this including plastic pipework. It's holding up great. ( Valspar for wood and metal is what i've used ) - Just get a good all round primer which will be dictated to by the type of cupboard door you have - The Armstead range of primers at Dulux trade centres is great paint.

Yes you can. To be honest, I slap the zinsser on and then two coats of really good undercoat and sand that. I always use Rustins undercoat which is water based and then if possible go over with oil based top coat. Others may have other recommendations for which undercoat. I find the people at Brewers are generally really helpful as they are constantly dealing with trade customers. I bought this tool on a recommendation and it is really useful for defluffing the edges of painted mdf. My house was full of conker brown varnish and I painted over veluxes with zinsser and it really works. It stinks (contains meths) and it with ruin the brushes but it's good stuff.
