Get Specific With StorageDetermine which items you use most frequently and how they can best be stored. “Successful storage happens when you get down to the nitty-gritty,” Coan says. “It goes beyond what you have. How do you use it? A baker who frequently uses a heavy-duty mixer should end up with different storage than someone who uses one once a year.” Because he removed a wall of cabinets to join the kitchen and family room in the same Birmingham home, Coan made up for lost storage in the peninsula. “We incorporated a wide range of innovative cabinet accessories, like hanging pot and pan organizers,” he says. “The new kitchen is much more efficient to work in.”
Working together. Coan learned to be hands-on from his engineer father. “If the furnace broke, we would take it apart and spread it out on the floor,” he says. “He would explain to me the functions of the parts and identify the failure. He taught me the components of a home and how tightly they work together.”
