I opted for 15" over 27", which left no room for crown, but I like my simple trim just fine: I might have gone with a single 42" cab with stacked doors, as it looked nice to me and cost way less, but DH uncharacteristically had an opinion about the kitchen reno and insisted on stacked.

Reply to: I have 8' ceilings with 39" upper cabinets. As Buehl suggested, we used a flat crown. We were going for "crisp shaker", like the streamlined look, and wanted to maximize storage space. Our ceilings aren't even remotely level, so the flat crown is scribed to the ceiling. It averages about 2 3/4" tall.

Reply to: We have 39" cabinets. Luckily, our cabinet choice didn't come in 42" (which was what we thought we wanted). This way we have lots of room for undercabinet lighting and clearance for counters, and still have room for a small moulding. With 42" cabs, and a light valance, you'd either be tight for counters or no space on top. Don't have crown moulding yet, so no pics. Have pics with space on top if you want that.

Reply to: We have 8 foot ceilings, took out the soffits, and chose not to run the cabinets/molding all the way up. I did not want a look that was heavy on the uppers, and felt that this made the space more open.

Reply to: I have 8' ceilings, and felt the same as you- wanted cabs to ceiling, and bistro cabinets (or are they called hutches?). We ended up with a 6" crown, and I like the way it came out. I also LOVE cooksnews' kitchen! Maybe would have done that if I had seen it. But, here is a picture of my just about done kitchen. Need backsplash and the some doors over the oven, handles and pulls, decor...but you can get the idea. Good luck- and post pictures when you're done!

Reply to: ethancremepie - My apologies for the delay in responding. Yes to the 36 with 6" molding - here are the same in the pantry. I haven't found the 3" of extra space to be missed and like the richness of the taller crown. Regarding how far out the hood is, we pulled forward the lower cabinets 6" (for the 30" countertops), and the cooktop cabinets and cooktop, 9". The upper cabinets are 18" deep, and the hood itself is at about 31.5, plus then the wood hood surround. 64" worked for us - we have a custom SS surround, so that there's a large capture areas. You can sort of see it from here: I know what you mean about the 8' ceilings! I used the bold tile to draw the eye away - but I'm sure there are plenty more tricks which would work.
