A chunk removed from a wall to see through to the next room without removing the whole wall

This wall has a hole in the middle separating a room from the kitchen. In this house the sitting room is slightly lower, so the sofa has a cozy sunken feeling backing onto the wall, but this wall would work in rooms on the same level. The hole can be open or glazed.

The upper half of the wall between kitchen and living room has been removed to make both rooms feel bigger. Keeping the lower section of wall allows units/furniture to still be placed against a wall. The wall hides any sink/worktop mess from being viewed from the living room. Noise, steam and smells will be experienced in both rooms. Could be more sociable.

When extending, it costs a lot to demolish walls and put in structural support. Removing part of a wall is cheaper and might help to keep some character.

Instead of banisters on the landing, build bookshelves. books could be accessed from stairs, as pic, or from landing. However - might block light.
