Tricky space 9: Small living room The solution: It's a bit counterintuitive, but too many itty-bitty pieces can make a room feel cluttered and cramped. Strike a balance by choosing pieces that look substantial but have sleek lines (no rolled arms!). Substituting an upholstered ottoman for the usual coffee table is an easy way to sneak in extra seating, and a pair of petite armchairs can fit in the space of a single overstuffed version. Finally, be sure to place lighting all the way into the back corners of a space — nothing shrinks a room faster than poor lighting.
The dining room table originally had wooden chairs to match, but they weren’t particularly inviting. Enid ended up moving the table to the corner and ordering a custom banquette. “[Jim] grew up in a kitchen with a red booth, and he always said everyone loves to hang out in a booth,” she says. “Our banquette isn’t red Naugahyde, but it attracts our teenage girls like a bowl of M&Ms. They now crawl on in, with their tea and their popcorn and their calculators and their laptops, and hours pass before they emerge.”
"Pretty banquette, huh? Fooled you, it's a settee against the wall. Here's an amazing alternative to a pricey, custom built-in. With the proper scale, a sofa or settee can work beautifully at a dining table. The biggest objective is to ensure it's easy for guests to get in and out of. If the piece is roughly 24 inches longer than the table on each side, that should do the trick. Also, stick with settees that have low-slung arms or that are completely armless."

The entryway’s update was probably the most dramatic. Benton removed the ornate entry post and railing in the first photo and replaced them with a simple post and a colorful potted fern. Modern house numbers and an industrial entry light simplify the space even more. The new glass front door, highlighted with dark charcoal trim, brightens the corner.
