We have a U kitchen with an island as well and opted for a full counter level island. This was mainly to make the entire thing function as a prep/homework/serving table as needed. I understand that some people like to hide the kitchen messes with a higher counter at times, but we've found that, when we had a separate kitchen, people still wandered there and we still kept is as organized (if not tidy) at all times anyways.
