Hi - Assuming you are not going ahead with the down lights I would suggest that you replace the ceiling light with a fixed height ceiling light. It doesn't look like you have high ceilings (correct me if i'm wrong), so you could go for something like this from Jim Lawrence, relatively affordable too: https://www.jim-lawrence.co.uk/arlington-pendant-light/arlington-pendant-light-in-antiqued-brass-3313ab?returnurl=%2farlington-pendant-light%2f  https://www.made.com/lighting/ceiling-lights also have some low level ceiling lighting, these are a bit modern than the one above.
