It's hot rolled steel finished with boiled linseed oil and wax...no patina. We hand selected sheets for this entire project and got particularly lucky in that the material we looked through was fairly dark and uniform. We generally had the lighter edges of the sheets cut off so that we were primarily using the darker center.
