The mezzanine landing provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and leads to five en-suite bedrooms, each with vaulted ceilings, creating a bright and airy feel. The master en-suite boasts a stunning gable window, framing the exact view Philip fell in love with, while the bold statement bathrooms throughout the house add a sense of modern luxury. A hidden entrance leads to Philip’s contemporary man cave, a contrasting retreat that looks out over the serene lake and stables. With three walls of floor-to-ceiling glazing, the garden room offers a tranquil space to relax while keeping an eye on the horses in the fields below. The living room features oak floor joists, adding warmth and character, while the impressive fireplace, built using the door jams from the original longhouse, serves as a striking centrepiece. The eastern elevation captures the sun, while panoramic honey oak apex windows allow light to flood into the cosy bedrooms, creating a luxurious hotel-like ambiance with a countryside twist. The bespoke chandelier, commissioned specifically for the double-height entrance hall, adds a touch of grandeur and is perfectly framed by the surrounding oak and glass. Every detail has been meticulously considered, from the lighting choices and colour schemes to the hidden man cave and feature walls, creating a home that is both practical and aesthetically stunning. The home’s natural honey-coloured stone exterior blends seamlessly with the landscape, giving the appearance of a property that has stood in its location for centuries. Nestled within Sydney’s historic Millers Point, this 1860s Victorian terrace has been reimagined as a serene family sanctuary—where patina-rich surfaces meet contemporary elegance. The curated interiors tell a story of history-infused maximalism, where every layer reveals a detail in service of heritage, emotion, and craft. Lorena Gaxiola’s poetic vision was to celebrate the family’s tri-cultural identity through salvaged timbers, artisanal finishes, and restrained yet expressive craftsmanship. From reinstated cornices to hand-finished brass accents and kauri floorboards, each intervention evokes a dialogue between past and present. Realising that vision required deft navigation of significant constraints: extensive structural damage from decades of water ingress and termites, heritage restrictions that demanded visual continuity, and tight access that challenged the logistics of modern construction. As designers, we oversaw every detail—from heritage review and documentation to construction coordination and bespoke installations. Threading new electrical, climate, and plumbing systems through fragile timber bones took surgical precision. Yet the results were seamless: original chandeliers revived, floorboards restored or matched with reclaimed timber, and American oak joinery paired with brass trims and marble mosaics brought new life to tired volumes. Design decisions were driven by sustainability, narrative, and craftsmanship. Custom pieces were commissioned from masters in their field—such as Lowe Furniture’s bespoke creations and a custom mural by Indigenous artist Danie Mellor, which pays homage to the family’s cultural roots. Each space was approached with emotion and intentionality, particularly the bathrooms which the client described simply and joyfully as: “The bathrooms make me happy.” Every room in the home unfolds like a story—patterned tiles, textured stone, and layered materials come together to offer intimate moments of discovery. Our commitment extended from spatial planning to final flourishes. We handled styling, soft furnishing installation, custom window treatments, and every curated object. Furniture was sourced locally, materials were salvaged when possible, and thoughtful detailing elevated every corner. The result is a timeless, emotionally resonant home—one that celebrates craftsmanship, elevates functionality, and preserves a precious piece of Sydney’s architectural legacy for generations to come.

Doch wir wollten mehr als nur eine gewöhnliche Wandgestaltung – etwas Besonderes, Ausgefallenes sollte es sein. Unsere individuelle Raumgestaltung nach Kundenvorlieben erlaubte uns mutig zu werden: Wir entschieden uns für eine helle, freundliche gelbe Wandfarbe, die dem Raum Lebendigkeit verleiht. Um das Ganze jedoch nicht überladen wirken zu lassen, neutralisierten wir dieses lebhafte Gelb mit natürlichen Beigetönen. Ein tiefes Blau setzt dabei beruhigende Akzente und schafft so einen ausgewogenen Kontrast. Auch bei der Auswahl der Pflanzen haben wir besondere Sorgfalt walten lassen: Die bestehende Pflanzensammlung wurde zu einem harmonischen Ensemble zusammengestellt. Hierbei empfahlen wir zwei verschiedene Pflanzenkübel – um Ruhe in die strukturreichen Gewächse zu bringen und ihnen gleichzeitig genug Platz zur Entfaltung ihrer Natürlichkeit bieten können. Diese Natürlichkeit spiegelt sich auch in den Möbeln wider: Helles Holz sorgt für eine authentische Atmosphäre und ruhige Stoffe laden zum Verweilen ein. Ein edles Rattangeflecht bringt abwechslungsreiche Struktur ins Spiel - genau wie unsere Gäste es erwarten dürfen! Damit das Licht optimal zur Geltung kommt, wählten gläserne Leuchten diese tauchen den gesamtem Bereich des Loungeraums in ein helles und freundliches Ambiente. Le mur de séparation, avec la pièce à vivre, ouvert a donné place à une belle verrière sur mesure. L'implantation du salon est inversé. La bibliothéque existante est modifiée et habille tout le pan de mur du salon. De nouveaux points lumineux sont apportés par de belles suspensions et des spots offrent un nouveau confort dans la cuisine. Des rangements et des meuble sur mesure sont créés. L'entrée a subi de grandes modifications. La décoration est complétée par des fauteuils, un tapis, un banc, des patères, des tentures et des stores. La table de salon et la console est une création d'Anne Marie Wimez pour AM Home Décoration en collaboration avec un ferronnier et un menuisier.

The client brief was to create a cosy and atmospheric space, fit for evening entertaining, but bright enough to be enjoyed in the day. We achieved this by using a linen effect wallcovering which adds texture and interest. The large chaise sofa has been upholstered in a dark herringbone weave wool for practical reasons and also provides a contrast against the wall colour. A gallery wall behind the sofa has been framed by two bronze Porta Romana wall lights which provide soft, ambient lighting, perfect for a relaxing evening. The armchair and ottoman have been upholstered in the same fabric to tie the two seating zones together and a bespoke calacatta viola marble coffee table wraps around the ottoman, providing a flat surface for drinks. To give the room a focal point, we built a chimney breast with a gas letterbox fire and created a recess for the large screen television. Bespoke fitted cabinets with fluted doors either side of the chimney provides ample storage for media equipment and the oak shelves, complete with LED lighting display a collection of decorative objects. In between the shelves we fitted beautifully patinated antique mirror to give the illusion of space.
