If the room is small I'd avoid warm colours on the walls. A Contemporary style always looks good with victorian features or something that is elegant and classical but still contemporary maybe in pale greys. A statement light or chandelier would also look great. Mirrors can work wonders in small rooms and also help bounce light like the wall to ŵall mirror SJD pictured or mirrors or mirror tiles in the chimney recess like this one pictured from AO.com. They aren't cheap ( personally love antiqued ones which are definitely not cheap!) though. A glass coffee table would help if not though so you can still see the floor space. Do you have pics? What light does the room get? Are you keeping all existing furniture and flooring etc?

hi Carolina, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me and love your ideas. I should have added more detail but you managed to visualize the layout quite closely. Actually, no door in dining area , only access thru sitting room. Love the area rug and have Macys one which will work perfectly - might pull a greyish -blue color from rug for walls maybe similar to the example you provided. Also have two mid-century style floor lamps which I can use. I really like the idea of a mural as the Wow - only concern is that radiator is on that wall. Do you think I could work around that somehow? Shelving will work perfectly - I was thinking something from Ikea or JLewis. Agree that blind is better and like curtains on patio door side. I am really hooked on the mural suggestion . Thanks and I will post a updated photo to show you the final result when we get everything done -hopefully by Dec. -especially now that I have something to show 'the main man'. You can have a nice outdoor rug to ground the space and add colourful cushions and blanket on your furniture. A small round side table for a small lamp to create some mood lighting and of course your lovely plants and some waterproof wall art on the walls. Cannot see the balcony completely but if some bamboo blinds can be hung from the ceiling above the rail to help reduce noise and pollution, that would be great.
