Small Dining room decoration help!

Hi there, I'm part way through buying a (very) small Georgian cottage and need some decorating inspiration for the dining room. The room is in the middle of the house so doesn't directly get any window light, there is a door way and a window archway through to the kitchen which itself is south facing. The blue aga style cooker you see if redundant but I quite like the style so would like it to stay as a feature...the kitchen will have white cupboards and the adjoining lounge will have pale neutral colours. What colour would suit the walls in here?? I love greys and scandanivan modern country style. I'd like to keep it as bright as possible but stay away from white! The dining table I have my eye on is below - it's extendable so won't take up a huge amount of space in the room daily. I don't like the floor but don't have the budget to replace is at the moment! Oh and the wall to the rear of the photo is exposed painted white brickwork. Thanks :)

Congratulations!

If you like Scandinavian style, I wouldn't jump in and buy that dining table just yet - I think the cream legs make it too farmhouse/country... Do a search on Houzz for Dining Rooms/Scandinavian/compact and loads of lovely rooms pop up that might give you some inspiration and direction.

Haha... your dilemma made me giggle a bit. Sorry. Usually you buy furniture first and a light to go with it, but hey ho... why not go the other way around. I'd say a rectangular table. Marble would be good, but industrial - black frame with wooden top could be good too. It would be interesting to know where the dining table is going. Could you share photos of the dining room/area? You can add them to a comment under here. Is it a separate room? Or is it an open plan kitchen dining area? What's on the floor? All things that play a role in choosing furniture.

You might not need to paint yet if you’re feeling stuck, I’d say get some big artwork with some pops of colours like blue/orange and neutrals and stick them on the wall behind the big chairs. Make sure they’re statement size For the table I’d go for something oak or wood just to bring some warmth to the room - also have you considered a round table? That might help soften the shapes there. Then get a big rug underneath too! Kukoon and Dunelm have some really affordable ones. Personally I’d find somewhere else to put the chairs, maybe one in the corner of your room or anywhere else. They crowd the room and look out of place, instead I’d pop a sideboard and put some nice little vases/ books on top for added layers Finally I’d change the light to something more low hanging and maybe wood/brown/earthy tones just to add some wow

Hello. I was studying your space, and I came up with some ideas. If you are open to them, here they are: 1.Get a brushed cotton sofa with legs at least 8cm; it gives some airiness to a room, making it look more spacious. 2.When choosing a table, allow the minimum distance between the edge of your table and a wall to be 90cm. This is for people to get in and out of their chairs comfortably. In addition, purchase armless dining chairs, which will give you a clean look for your dining space. 3.You asked what to do with a wall with a small window; I suggest having sheers and curtains across the whole wall. It will soften the place and will make a room feel larger. 4.You have little spotlights on the walls, which are excellent for creating a different mood in the evening. They can be nicely framed using decorative moulding. It will elevate your space. 5.If you like a moulding wall design, you can have picture frame moulding. You can even use wallpaper inside those frames. It is a relatively inexpensive way to luxe up your space. 6.Your ceiling has an orange undertone; to tone down that orange, go for cooler undertones in your curtains and upholstery. Here I mean whatever colour you choose, grey for your sofa and a lighter colour for your curtains, look for cool undertones when choosing them. Cool undertones are blues, purples, and greens. When selecting a grey sofa, try to identify the undertone. Does this grey colour have blue, green or purple? 7. I also made a quick visualisation of your space. Please note that this only suggests the layout and the room's look. The furniture is only for guidance, and no advice is provided for the colour palette. Little Greene Clay pale is a lovely warm neutral that would work with the cream table. If you want grey then I'd look at greige to go with the cream. I think the clay pale should work with their fescue for the living room (I don't have their neutral paint chart just grey which fescue is and I find the colours are a bit off online!). Is the floor wood or laminate? Just wondering if you could lighten it. I would in any case paint the beading to match the skirting boards. I think the table will look great with a bench against the wall, a couple of mid century modern chairs on the side and perhaps farmhouse at the end. I'd also hang a pendant over the table, using a hook if budget is an issue. Also add a mirror to bounce a bit more light. Good luck on the purchase!

Beautiful space. Love the blue aga. I would toy with decorating the chimney breast section in a darker tone or colour - Farrow and Ball do some gorgeous historical tones. Then I would reflect that colour into your picture frames and soft furnishings. This will mean that you retain the bright features, but you get a pop of interest at all levels.

I work in Styling, and one of my favourite ideas is to take an accent wallpaper, and then frame it for some instant art to reflect the walls. They don't have to be huge frames, just pops of colour. Feel free to send a message if you would like to brainstorm props.
