I love them. From genuine antique mirrors to the new antique style splashbacks or tile effect. I have a bricked up arch window at the end of my hall which I'd love to have antiqued glass cut to fit but sadly out of budget atm. I also love the antique style splashbacks similar to the award winning mowlems kitchen design (not quite so keen on the pic above) but I'm really not convinced it will work in my kitchen. I recently bought an antique dressing table which has a very aged looking mirror, looks great but you can't actually see in it properly!

Saw an article on Apartment Therapy talking about mirrored splashbacks recently. Had some lovely photos featured, I personally preferred the options where the glass is raised up from the hob slightly. Could you maybe get a piece of the upstand cut to fill the gap? Also having it 'framed' by wall either side looks better to me than it spanning the whole space. I've mocked it up to extractor fan level and to ceiling level (I've guesstimated the tile scale but hope it gives you the idea). As an alternative you could just mirror the alcoves and have art over the fire. It may not need to be toughened then. If you want it over the mantle I'd just have a mirror rather than go the whole width of the chimney breast if that's what you meant
