POLL: Conservatories and garden rooms - yay or nay?
Comments (121)I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise....See MorePOLL: Bungalow - love or loathe?
Comments (85)Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Our originally depressing, generic ittle bungalow on a sloping site has become a four bed live-work space on three levels that is beginning to feel more like our home...See MorePOLL: Monochrome - yay or nay?
Comments (22)@Tom Flanagan - thank you! It is my last two homes / projects. I went from Regency mansion flat renovation to 1960's tower block for the view. But, Oh what a view! When I have finished the refurb I will put pics on the website and/ or in my Case Studies eBooks: www.mendinghouses.com. If you sign up for the newsletter I can let you know when each of the books comes out (there are 10 or so in the making - 30 years of doing up property!). Thanks again for the compliment! Comments (2)Not as simple as that I'm afraid. TV's will work in most room without any issues, but when using a projector you need to factor in other environmental issues. If the room has a high ambient light level a projector won't work unless you use sufficient shading. Also a projector doesn't have any speakers, so you'll have to install some type of surround sound system. In our opinion a projector only system should by used in a cinema room in a basement or garage conversion where there are minimal or no windows. A duel system works well in a Living environment (which we call a media room) where your everyday viewing is on the TV and you use the 2.35:1 Projector Screen for your movies....See More- 11 years ago
