I would say keep. The wallpaper and the carpet on the other hand....
In all seriousness, it would look much better if you keep the walls and flooring toned down and neutral. Whatever you do, don't put it on a skip, but bring it to a salvage yard or something like that.

Disguise with MDF faux chimney around it ? Then if and when it comes back into fashion you can expose it again?

Please don't remove an original feature, once it's gone, it's gone forever, particularly a tiled example like this. They're difficult to remove without damage so you can't even pass it in to someone else to enjoy....

I like it. I would get rid of the wallpaper and paint a color to compliment the tiles...maybe the gold tone.

There were two of these in my house when we bought it. The one in the lounge has been replaced by a wood burner, I can't wait to get rid of the one in the dining room. My house is victorian and they certainly weren't original.

It could never be an attractive feature -skip it as soon as possible. Original does not always mean good or attractive and there are an awful lot of "original" features around which need putting in a skip. sometimes we live with ghastly stuff just because it is fondly believed to be a period piece. Come on would anyone want to live with a black leaded stove from the Victorian/Edwardian eras.

Work with it, put a working fir inside the hearth and some interesting things on the mantle . Once you have replaced the wallpaper carpets etc everything will start to take shape. If you really can't live with it then, then rip it out.

Keep - can you spray paint it in a kind of chrome? Make it an art deco feature??

You obviously don't love this fireplace or you wouldn't be asking, so please get rid - and find another you are passionate about.

Id take a photo and send to your local reclaim specialist and ask if they are interested, if it's something special they probably offer to remove it so it doesn't get damaged. You'll soon tell from their response if it's anything special or not.

Hi These fireplaces are almost impossible to remove with out damaging them. They are basically made of concrete which has metal rods running through to support the concrete with tiles on top. It is not a pretty fireplace the tiles are not a great colour and will not enhance your room. If it was a beautiful victorian fireplace that would be a different matter and i would urge you to keep it. Having had several of these in houses I have refurbished I would recommend it goes. They are very heavy.

We had four of these in our Georgian House, skipped them and we are replacing with reclaimed Georgian stone fireplaces- much more attractive, and much less brown! The one in the living room had been boxed over with mdf painted wood and looked ok. As the commenter said above, they are just concrete and rods inside so they do make a real mess when ripping them out, but definitely worth it in the end.

If this is your house, you will be living in it for the next few years and you don't like that fireplace - it is definitely worth getting rid of it. It seems quite an imposing feature that would severely limit the decor possibilities in the room if you kept it. It is unlikely any salvage yard would pay enough to justify the transport/removal costs; I think you'll find that because the tiles are plain rather than patterned they simply aren't worth reclaiming. However, it could be an idea for your peace of mind to email a picture to a reclamation yard (just google for some local places) to check, as a previous poster suggested.
I live in a 1930s house and I wouldn't want a fireplace like that in the living room - terrified of cracking the tiles! We have a stone and granite surround which replaces the grey brick monstrosity previous owners put in. We have an "original" 30s white-tiled fireplace in the main bedroom upstairs and that's scheduled to be skipped as well - it's dull and impractical so it'll never be more of a selling-point than "ooh! a fireplace in the bedroom!" so we figure we might as well make it a prettier/more practical one. Original features are only a bonus when they are pretty and/or useful!
The only thing to check is the hearth, if it has one - if it's solid stone/marble/granite then it could be worth keeping or selling separately.

This fireplace could be a great feature especially if the room lacks character - of course I do not know if this is actually the case. Some of the tiling pattern is inspired by art deco and could be a subtle motif in your new scheme, say on textiles or rug. I agree that the colours are a bit dull but you can compensate for this with your choice of paint/wallpaper/soft furnishings. You do not need to do the whole 1930s thing as an eclectic mix is very chic right now. Even the once-despised utility furniture is very much in demand and one of the more interesting examples could work well with this surround and with otherwise modern decor.
IMO bare chimney breasts look miserable and so you would need to go to the expense of replacing it with something. If your house is 1930s or thereabouts, putting in an ornate Victorian fireplace will look a bit over the top as well as cost a fortune. Of course if you want an ultra-modern look you could have an inset fire to provide a focal point - I'm not a fan but each to their own!
Anyway, don't rush to tear it out as it will make a huge mess. First try creating some mood boards in different colourways (with pics of any items that you intend to keep in the room) and incorporating a large photo of the fireplace and see if it grows on you!

Everything comes back into fashion eventually. It's not very long ago that people were ripping out Victorian and Edwardian fixtures and fittings and who'd have thought in the 90s that 70s style would be back? I'd agree with the "box it in with MDF" idea. What is hideous today could be desirable in 2025!

But why would anyone want to live with MDF boxing just at the risk of being fashionable in 2025? Enjoy your house with the things in it that you like no amount of spraying with chrome, trying to bring out its finer Art Deco features etc etc will actually conceal the fact that this is one ugly fire place. Why does a home have to be fashionable anyway - it's a warm, lively growing place not a statement.

All good comments and it's great to have this discussion because it highlights the different ways we, the public, relate to our homes. It's rare today for a house to be lived in by the same family for a generation, so the re-sale potential will be a factor when we decide to do home improvements. Therein lies the dilemma. I'd suggest make a list of the pros and cons of the fireplace over a period of time (asking visitors to your home to perhaps add to the list). This may help taking an objective view in the matter.

The problem with tiled fireplaces is usually the ghastly colour. I painted mine white because I liked the shape and it was in proportion to the dimensions of the room. Try this before donating it to salvage. Don't just bung it in a skip - someone will like it even if you don't.

We renovated a property with 1930's tiled fireplaces . We gave ours free to a charity that deals with dementia patients. They decorate rooms for the elderly with period features and it really helps them feel comfortable.

Keep it. It is nice to have a feature. Paint the wall a dark shade so that it stands out. Solid wood oak floor to give a contemporary feel.
