1950/60s bungalow renovation help need
Comments (37)We spent around 15k initially getting the house liveable. as like the property you are interested in... It was not at all just a paint job. We replaced the bathroom but we didn't have to change any major plumbing though. 2 years ago we spent approx 30 k on loft extension. Which the steal for the roof ended up a lot more expensive than we thought. Also included staircases, two bedrooms, bathroom, storage & carpets. We did have a few trade pals to help out so that may reflect a guess estimate 5k extra for professional trade??? To be honest I wanted to rush and get everything done in one go... But in hindsight taking a bit of time living in the house really helped to not make expensive mistakes in the long run and as like you we were undecided about options. After time the most practical arrangements became clear. So, patience paid off in the end!! All though we have no plans to move we have added enormous value to the house so that also gives extra peace of mind that this is money well spent. Hope that helps.. And you successful get your house...! Ps here was our feature wall.. Not sure york stone wall features are about to make a return.. Well I haven't seen any on Houzz yet!! Take care...See MoreDo I dare to go dark?
Comments (4)I wish more people were brave with colour. Here's how to do it well:- Paint the whole room even the chimney breast. Paint the ceiling off white or grey..... Sometimes a pure brilliant white is too much contrast. Make sure that the dark is used to frame lots of lighter parts- think pale curtains on a wide pole. Lots of pale pictures on the walls. Since you are drawn to the intimate look don't forget to light it well at night..... Avoid very white light, have lots of table lamps, an up lighter, lights in plants or under furniture and perhaps a few dimmers...See MoreBuyers for fireplaces
Comments (3)Thanks drpepe101, although I should have mentioned they are already listed on Preloved and Gumtree - I was just wondering if there were any specific companies who buy these that I could approach?...See MoreWhat to do with a bricked up fireplace.
Comments (4)So I haven't moved in yet but this is it currently. That whole fireplace is a freestanding suite, the chimney breast is bricked up. I'm tempted to have no fireplace at all, I'd prefer that to a faux thing tbh. I'm having a folding door put in on the the very right hand side so it opens through to the dining room, and was planning on a dark grey/green on this wall. Another option is to re-open the chimney breast and have something put in, even if it's decorative. But then I'm not sure what suits a 50s house - I'm drawn to black cast iron but I've always lived in Victorian properties... Oh, I'll be changing the lights too :-)...See MoreRose Williams
