Order for installing range, hood, counters, tile

I had thought the correct order was:

first the range

then the counters (so counters are templated with range in place)

then the backsplash

then the hood (we are tiling behind the hood)

But if hood is last it has to be held up over the range-- awkward. And we cannot do the burn off on the range til hood is installed.

Anyone have any other ideas or thoughts about this?

My GC had it done this way.

Counters
Hood
Backsplash
Range

Hood went in before tile and range because tile was not going up to bottom edge of hood (not behind it). I assume hod was easier to install before range was on the way.

Backsplash went in before range because it was easier to install tile behind the range, and the range would be installed along with all other appliances by the crew my GC uses to install appliances. I'm sure he wanted to install all appliances at the same time, and wanted the tile contractor to work without appliances in the kitchen.

As a result of counters going in first, I don't have a super tight fit between my range and the granite counters. I have not done anything yet to fill the 1/16'' gap either side, so junk can fall in the crack.

Thanks again for all your comments. Particularly helpful to be alerted to socket issue. I took these pics before the builder replaced the sockets with some nice chrome ones. (see new pics) However, he's still got them in the wrong place. Will raise that today. He hasn't actually finished the hood area in these pictures - as I stopped him. But also the chimney extractor doesn't seem to be functioning so it needs to come down anyway. This solves this problem and we can tile behind it - although I'm still worried that he's not going to be able to redo the job well enough. I've added some more pics with better light. Still finishing the floor and just have to adjust and tweak a few things but (apart from tiling) nearly there! The kitchen is Howdens Burford Grey, Pure White Quartz from Master Quartz (not been impressed with this as marking so easily with pans, belt buckles, any kind of grime - but probably shouldn't have chosen white! - anyone else had problems with their quartz?), Paint mainly F&B Wimborne White and Slipper Satin woodwork, engineered oak floor from Howdens.

Tiles are one way to introduce some pops of colour in your kitchen. If you are worried about the grout discolouring, use epoxy grout which is more resilient to liquid staining. Also, if you use a coloured grout, discolouration will be less noticeable. If you choose textured tiles with rectilinear edges, grout lines are almost invisible. Using tiles can look more traditional compared to glass or stainless steel. The problem with stainless steel is keeping it looking good. Drip marks and grease are instantly noticeable. Glass is less obvious when splashed. They are both more industrial and modern looking. What about using the same material that makes up your worktop as the splashback? Most manufacturers of manmade worktops also do an 11mm thick splashback and upstand.

Hi, In this case you would need to create open plan kitchen together with dining room. Get rid of the wall in between and create cosy, open a space area. Range cooker would be nice, but not next to the door. You are going to loose working place, plus open fire next to entrance is not an option. If you are planing to "redecorate" your kitchen only, you can simply get new doors for base units, new wall units & new extractor would be nice too. Maybe something industrial looking? Accessories, plants, new tiles would make the kitchen looking alive till the time you will decide to get a new kitchen. Where are so many shaker style doors! So many colours and finishes it's mad! So if you would like to improve your kitchen with minimal investment, get creative! Small bits and peaces will make it look like kitchen where you would like to spend your time. Which is the most important.

I've read about the problems some people have had with electric underfloor heating. Mostly the cost of running it. Underfloor heating works best with good insulation under it. Fitters of electric underfloor heating avoid insulation to keep the height of the new floor to a minimum, but this results in a lot of heat loss into the floor. With electric costing four times the amount gas does some have said with the huge heat loss through the floor combined with cost of electric they saw their bills go up ten fold. The electric may seem like it's cheaper but overall it can cost a lot more. Especially if you are doing the entire ground floor. I recommend researching further before committing to electric underfloor heating.

If you're going to tile behind the hood then you need to put the hood in last. If you're only tiling up to the bottom of the hood (which is what I did) then you can install the hood earlier. If you're going with a chimney hood or something similar then you probably do need to tile behind it, but if it's a regular wall hood, you can just tile up to the bottom of the hood.

I am wondering about the same thing, but what if you have a rangetop instead of a range? Also, we will have a wall hood and plan to tile the whole exposed wall. Is it recommended to tile behind the hood?

Thanks for the responses. It is a bit of a conundrum because would like to get the hood in before the range (and would like it running when we do the range burnoff). But the tile is going to the ceiling behind the hood. And, Jon confirmed that doing range then counters makes a tight fit more attainable. Still, we are worried about reaching over the range to put the hood up. I just don't see any other way other than partially tiling down to near the counter and then finishing later.

Please feel free to learn from my mistake. At the very least, have the rangetop/range on-site and make the templater (new noun??) look at it, measure it, analyze it...and even bring it in, if necessary.

I asked my GC and his team several times if it would be prudent to position the rangetop during the counter templating, but received the all-to-familiar shake of the head.

Instead, they browsed the stovetop's installation manual and made a measuring mistake. Our rangetop is designed to sit on a 3/8" lip of counter, sorta like a self-rimming sink.

Both sides of the counter surrounding the rangetop had to be redone, and now the corner seam is no longer perfect, but "within industry standards."

kitchenkrazed09 - if you have a wall hood, it's not necessary to tile behind the hood, none of the wall behind the hood will be visible, and in fact will make it more difficult to install the hood - you'll have to drill through the tile to install the hood. On the other hand, if you have a chimney hood where some of the wall behind the hood is visible, then you would want to tile behind the hood.
