Home - it's a fluid term to say the least. We all have different interpretations of what makes a house a home; from the people that live within it, to the way it's designed and even to the memories formed around the place, each is an influencer!

Starting from scratch... What makes a house a ‘home’?
Comments (7)Most of us would be excited to "start from scratch"! Well, I would, because what I have to work with is a mishmash of inherited things from our two, very different, upbringings. I think what I'd do first is make the space minimally functional and livable (bed, linens, bare necessities in the kitchen and LR) with some plan or idea of what I envision later in terms of colors, style of furnishings, etc. To personalize it and make it feel like a home... look for things that remind you of your idea of "home" whether that's a color scheme or a style of furniture or a collection of accessories... keeping in mind that homes evolve over time, and that is the fun of it! Maybe it would help to write a list of things you consider essential for your home... and go from there. For example, my daughter just moved across country, and her first priority was getting the bedroom to feel like her sanctuary, so she spent most of her energy getting that put together first....See MoreTurning a house into a home. Comments (23)@clairef09 - I would never tile the chimney breast as the external corners would be an issue unless there is a ceramic/porcelain corner piece. You might consider using stone as you can then have mitred joints, however the cost is a consideration. With painting you can change the colour whenever you please for a relatively low cost. As to colour I would go for one that is a favourite of yours.... or shade of. Personally I like the duck shell blue colour ranges but this really is something you should stamp your mark on as you will be living with it. You can always buy some small sample paint pots and then choose... :-) I also find that art can be used very effectively to bring warmth to a room and the question then is whether you wants something that makes an "interior design" statement of those which reflect your personal taste. Seeing as this is the room that you will spend a lot of time in I would go with the art that you love to look at.... for me "interior designer" art is best kept for hotel rooms and commercial spaces. Comments (12)i'd try and put downstairs WC underneath the stairs - external wall for pipes and get a window too. The space you have for WC in extension plans could be used for pantry or tall cupboards/fridge set back into the space so they don't stick into the kitchen. Have you thought about making Bed4 into family bathroom and turning existing bathroom into office or storage space? With it having an external wall to the side it might not be too difficult for sewage/waste pipes (assuming they already run down the side of the house). But really you're just getting a slightly bigger bathroom and the bathroom you have looks like a fairly typical UK bathroom so maybe just make the most of it. Adding a toilet downstairs is much more valuable I'd say. Regarding loft - I don't think you need a bathroom up there unless it's the main bedroom suite - for kids or occasional guests I'd say its ok to make them come downstairs for loo/shower. I'd leave that alone for now and maybe add a dormer at a later date if/when you have the money or feel like you need a loo/shower up there....See MoreWhat changes can I make in this house?
Comments (3)I was going to suggest what Jonathan has drawn. I think it’s an easier option than building up the extension, which may not be possible if the foundations are not suitable for a 2-storey build. You could use the old bathroom area outside the bathroom as a small study area with desk overlooking the garden. I’d also consider what to do with the downstairs bathroom - it looks like a lot of wasted space. You may be able to use it as a utility / laundry or boot room, either as is or section off a part of it....See More

PRO10 years agoAfter filling it with happy memories with your favourite people...it is your favourite colour walls and your chosen fabrics for soft furnishings... Up cycling old furniture and pre-loved pieces with your own hand painted Annie Sloan colours and lovely upholstery = totally unique pieces that you'd never find on the highstreet! Accessorising with pieces you find on market days - something you've spotted and found a place for.
