How do you all do it?

I love this app/web place and love looking at people pictures but how do you guys all come up with such good ideas and have it look great. we have been in our place for 4 years, one of the plus of it was thinking nothing needs to be done as I was half way through my accounts qualification. that turned out not to be the case as whilst previous owners did it all up to look great, they bogged it big style and we have had a number of issue with water!

We had to do stuff to bathroom, which still needs finishing, then the lounge (both due to water issues) I do like my lounge but not sure on TV area. we did driveway (again to reduce water damage) and I love it just need to get some plants.

I want to focus on dinning room and hall stairs and landing this year and see stuff I like but I am not good on working out what goes with what, we are good at hording stuff! think also having spent 4 years studying I am wanting to spend time out doing stuff!

Thank you all I def want to start going through magazines and cutting out what I like. I am working on the de cluttering, this weekend I got rid of 2 boxes that had not been unpacked since we moved here. x

Hi there. I'm an interior designer of repute... No - scratch that. I'm a student who messes around designing when I'm not studying.
If you're asking how do you know what to do or where to start when designing, the plain truth is, you don't. It's like writing in that. The author Louis L'amour said, 'start writing. The water does not flow until the tap is opened'. I find that quite true.
design is my hobby. I've never studied it formally nor done courses and the like. I just downloaded some apps and had fun.Homestyler is quite useful. Try it out. You don't have to be an expert. Try out things and you'll developed a sense of what works and what doesn't for you. Have fun. Good luck

Thank you, I will look in o the app, I get a !magazine called your home and have a few years worth to go through which hopefully will help..

Ettel you wouldn't have to change the off white walls if you went for whitewashed/limed pale wood or used a white oil or wax on it Scandi style. I haven't seen it done but I was thinking of kitchens and floors in this kind of wood that I have noticed on Houzz. I also thought of the slightly rougher wood cladding used externally on buildings that you may be able to get from a wholesaler in a smaller quantity. This could give you a nice kind of rustic effect but then it would be up to you if you wanted to follow that into full country style or go with a more modern rustic aesthetic. I have seen nice things from habitat that would work with that. Just a more minimal look than country. Sorry, I've never attached a photo on houzz.

Sonia, @Rinked, Jonathan, Victoria et al, how nice to get a notification from Houzz after all this time age read your posts. I’m so sorry that you’re facing tough times @Rinked. Sonia how lovely that your pet cat is getting you through what must be challenging times. My house is ‘finished’ in the sense that I got to 85% done and though ‘this’ll do’ . Before and after pics of the latest project below. But the new dream is to build our own house in a couple of years, so I can see myself back on here full time soon!

Try some shade and drought tolerant plants if you want to grow owt underneath it. The ring of bricks above give a fair idea of the look. irregular stone blocks might look more natural. A narrow level trench (footings) will indeed be best to do it properly. Then some aggregate, concrete, and blobs of mortar (concrete with more sand added) between each block as you build the levels up. There will be countless vids online showing 'how-to'.

Symmetry - Balance - trial and error - keep it simple - think how it works in several extreme situations - and lastly do you love it - that covers most things !! If in doubt ask for help !!

Re hoarding things - if you really want to keep it all - invest in great looking storage !

Love Najeebah's comments - how true. However when you have an eye for design, you know instinctively when something does not look right, and you play around with the design until the symmetry is right. For the beginner, buy home design books, cut out what you like and make a mood board. You then find out what you like, and the type of design. We have all made mistakes, but nothing is forever, colours can be changed, furniture can be painted/changed, etc. All our ideas are just that - ideas - some work for some, some not, but remember it is your home, and you have to like and live in it, so do what you like.

Oh, and, forgot to add - de-clutter first - you will be amazed at the space you now have. If you have not used something in 9 months, you do not need it, so give to another hoarder, or sell, even better.

Houzz is fantastic for ideas. I must confess I also subscribe to 25 beautiful homes which is a great source of inspiration. Having bought all of the interior magazines for a few years I personally find this the best. More often than not, a design is inspired by one piece of furniture or art that you love. Most of my house was inspired by a single image long before we were even thinking about buying a new house .Scale tends to be my issue. I would therefore recommend looking at layouts of furniture to see what comfortably fits before buying anything (cuttings out templates helps). I like symmetry and my house is georgian so it's key but I got so excited about my new large lounge that I bought 2 different sized v large sofas (went in to buy 2 identical) and I am now stuck with the layout. Also, if you are on a strict budget or you are unlikely to redo within a few years, maybe go for a classic style that can be updated with a couple of cheap contemporary items. Paint is also cheap to update but wallpaper not, unless you can do it yourself. New cushions can also update a look cheaply. Don't forget lighting either, it can make a room. Layering different textures and mixing old and new makes a room look more expensive and more as if the room has evolved.

Thanks guys for your great help, and will poss put some pics later of my lounge to see what you think in regards to TV etc, however hubby through my life in termiol last night saying he never wanted to live where we are (even though he agreed with it and I left final decision with him). He is not well at mo so I know that is not helping but he can not get over that it was done on the bodge and we are left with the cost of it. Now I don't know what I feel like I want to do.

Most men need time to think about things, and we as dutiful (!!) wives make sure that he makes the final decision, or at least he thinks it is!!!! Years of experience has told me this. He will sleep on it and decide HE has made the right decision. Hang on in there. (Sorry male followers).
