Kitchen refurbishing

We have lived in the house for nearly 10 years now and we are looking to redo our kitchen.a lot of the cupboards and the floor look in good condition but they will need replacing.we need a lot of clever storage space and are going with an urban/modern look also we're looking for a bit of a redesign on a budget of £3000 any help?

Hi there! Do you have a colour scheme in mind? Sometimes a new colour changes everything and might get the ideas whirring!

For that budget you will struggle to change the furniture and all of the other bits. You may be better changing a few little things that will make a huge difference. I suggest the floor, door handles, wall colour, dining table and splashback. If the wood is suitable painting the furniture may work but this is completely dependent on the colour scheme. To get a more modern look will require a flat slab door but this is obviously reliant on your budget.

For the wow factor may I suggest a glass splashback. It can run behind the cooker as well as it is easily cleaned. You paint behind the glass which means you can have any colour you like. You can also back light it to make it stand out (see picture attached)

Well done! Sometimes if carcasses and outside of the kitchen are still great quality, respray option is a great way to facelift the kitchen look!

Sorry for the delay in responding to the comments... Unfortunately, the after photo was a little dark and really doesn't show the transformation in it's best light - if you'll pardon the pun! The original kitchen was in an annex extension which was demolished, whereas the new kitchen forms part of a new, larger open-plan space. The tiles are Italian porcelain (check out tile suppliers on HOUZZ or alternatively someone like Topps Tiles who may do something similar). There is a mirrored shelf unit about the sink. We designed the internal refurbishment for our clients and they sourced the kitchen from Devol Kitchens. Here is a better photo (probably the one we should have used first....)

the splashback has existing tiles to be removed so without replastering it would be simpler to replace with tiles. The walls are currently an off white but more towards the yellow spectrum. like the idea of an off white if it leans more towards the blue or grey side. Evening is rolling in now so not the best lighting but here is a picture with all current contents.

Then i would aim for a grey tone. Grey is one of the most popular colours whether it be dove grey (light grey) or dust grey (a darker grey). Grey is neutral so you could then paint your walls and have contrasts with accessories. The grey would also suit your existing worktop.

I would say you could probably afford a new kitchen plus flooring on that budget. I'm currently doing exactly the same for my mum and her budget is £2600

I am agree with Treyone,to have a proper quality job done your budget is too tiny.
I could help with bespoke Kitchen construction and one off artwork splash back but you need to put more budget,unless you want to change just doors but i don't know the actual state of hinges and carcasses.
Boiler unit as it is looks bad it could be enhance as well,and changing wall colour it is always a good step.

If you are up for some Diy you could refresh but I am not sure even Diy your budget is enough for new everything. We are going to refurb our whole fixer upper house, the kitchen will be a main thoroughfare but I just couldn't live in my early 80's kitchen so we have just done s makeover for about £800. New sink, hob, work tops, flooring, lights (ceiling down lighters and pendants and under cabinet) some additional tiling, and lots of paint and hard work! We stripped and repapered and emulsioned all walls, painted tiles and kitchen units. It is not finished yet but before and after pics below.

The units don't look that old, I would replace just the door and drawer fronts, some new handles, splash of paint, maybe some new accessories. All easily achievable within £3k

If you're replacing the whole kitchen, I would redesign it to use more drawers, wider ones, and clever internal storage for corner cupboards. Also look at larder units. I reckon you could then get away with fewer units. We have no wall units at all. We used Howdens, you'll need to use a builder to buy from them, and a walnut laminate work surface. Our kitchen was roughly £3k, but that didn't include flooring or appliances. Good luck, there are some good sites out there for planning a kitchen ergonomically.

I think you can update your kitchen with the budget, you can buy replacement doors in all colours, styles and finishes to get the look you want. You can then spend more on great work tops, lighting and flooring. Good luck with the revamp.

Heatherbroadbent, what a fantastic update! A stylish great 'new' kitchen on a mini budget, well done!
I would certainly suggest something similar. I have an even smaller budget so will just change grouting in tiles, get new kitchen door handles, paint the wall, get new floor and some pictures on the bigger walls... Probably around £600 (not including pictures).

Thank you Ellripley. Not finished yet. Open shelves to go up by the sink and more painting to do. The after photos were taken at night time so it looks darker than it is but we are v happy with the result - and the cost !

No wonder heatherbroadbend, really stylish, modern and elegant. I absolutely love how clean the lines look with the update, I would certainly chose a grey kitchen if had the budget for a full update!

We are just deciding on how to split our budget of 'as little as possible' to make our kitchen liveable for next 12-18 months before we gut it and completely remodel. Obviously we want to spend as little as we can as everything we spend is money we can't spend on the rest of the house renovation.

Our problem is that many of our units are in very damaged / poor condition due to a leaking sink, we we will also need to replace. There is also hardly any storage. - we can't have (cheap) open shelving because our naughty cats are ninjas and like to climb and knock things off.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated. I was thinking of either getting a few basic ikea units, and a large dresser off gumtree or eBay - or trying to pick up an entire kitchen second hand off eBay and painting it?

Heatherbroadbent your kitchen is fantastic, you have given me some ideas and inspiration for the small kitchen in the flat I'm buying. In fact the cupboard doors look identical so I hope I can mine look as good as yours!

Katherine91 and Foremanvicky, thank you! We still have to paint the carcasses which you can see peeping through! (we did the doors first to see if we liked the colour) We colour matched Valspar Premium in Farrow and Ball colours to keep cost down. Used ESP primer to get the 'key' on the smooth melamine (or whatever it is!) then used varnish roller to apply the eggshell paint. The finish is really good. It was very simple just time consuming as we did it in evenings when 3 year old was in bed - no fingerprints
