It shouldn't be much of an issue for the drapes as they are very close to floor length but are covered up by the bed and the rocker anyway. :). So there should be a gap between the rod & the top of the shades then? I think my husband assumed it should sit right on top. I've actually never heard of a pelmet. I'm off to check google! I thought the fairy lights were rather cute & the girls love them. Only a few dollars at ikea too. :)

I agree. There's nothing wrong with seeing a bed in full view, even if the room is small! This is, after all, the focal point of the room and its main purpose/function. Get yourself some lovely bed linen and some great cushions, a throw/blankets etc. to make it into more of a proper feature, and something to enjoy looking at. Putting a bed under a window can be a bit of a problem in terms of access, draughts, damp etc. so I'd avoid it if it's not absolutely necessary!
