Wall light ideas

We are currently renovating an 1800 cottage which has wooden candlestick like wall lights throughout the house. We would like to replace them as they are quite dated in our opinion and just not our style! They also don't omit much light. We are sticking with a cottage feel but don't want anything too fancy or traditional. There is also no other lighting in the room, so they would need to be bright especially as the room has limited natural light.

Any ideas?! p.s the dado and picture rail will be painted so the room will be little more neutral. The beams are not being painted.

Hello,

I have a lot of ideas for you! Before anything else I always first suggest people to think of their style they like and start off from there to make life easier.

We all have some style we like or it could be even multiple. This Living area looks beautiful, feautering Traditional/Rustic style. I collected some images for your inspiration that I hope it will help. You got to think of what style you would like to have, or how is it going to be the interior decorated cause that counts as well. You said you wouldn't like to go for nothing fancy or traditional. I would suggest you the spot lights to keep your space bright, and they would actually look pretty nice fitted in the the beams.

A contemporary style chandelier would also look great in the middle of the room, you could consider glass lamps, they are very popular. I also thought of Industrial style and added a pendant light.

I would personally go for a contemporary style hanging lamp and probably some spot lights.

I would encourage you to have a ceiling light(s) installed. We lived in a flat with wall lights only and it was very dark, despite using the highest wattage light bulbs. After several months we had it rewired, the ceiling light made tremendouos difference.

Please provide a floor plane. I’ve had four-light versions of those (bought at the hardware store) in two rooms for over forty years. I use FLOOD bulbs for even light. I still get compliments. Both are on dimmers. The bedroom has a white fixture to match its ceiling, while the dining room has a black one to blend with the deep bitter chocolate brown of that ceiling.

Understood :-) you may be surprised at our costings though, everything we do is handmade but at a reasonable cost as its all done in house, sometimes words like bespoke, custom, crystal and chandelier tend to mean high prices but not with us. Hi, have you seen enamel shades they sell a lot of the components needed for making your own lighting and they have the Rigby fitting you show above https://www.enamelshades.co.uk/search?page=1&q=wall+light The idea acew1234 mentioned of using a rigid flex is a good one as a pendant hanging close to wall will hit off of the wall when doors are opened or people walk by which could damage both the shade and the wall.
