Wall light ideas

We are currently renovating an 1800 cottage which has wooden candlestick like wall lights throughout the house. We would like to replace them as they are quite dated in our opinion and just not our style! They also don't omit much light. We are sticking with a cottage feel but don't want anything too fancy or traditional. There is also no other lighting in the room, so they would need to be bright especially as the room has limited natural light.

Any ideas?! p.s the dado and picture rail will be painted so the room will be little more neutral. The beams are not being painted.

I have a lot of ideas for you! Before anything else I always first suggest people to think of their style they like and start off from there to make life easier.

We all have some style we like or it could be even multiple. This Living area looks beautiful, feautering Traditional/Rustic style. I collected some images for your inspiration that I hope it will help. You got to think of what style you would like to have, or how is it going to be the interior decorated cause that counts as well. You said you wouldn't like to go for nothing fancy or traditional. I would suggest you the spot lights to keep your space bright, and they would actually look pretty nice fitted in the the beams.

A contemporary style chandelier would also look great in the middle of the room, you could consider glass lamps, they are very popular. I also thought of Industrial style and added a pendant light.

I would personally go for a contemporary style hanging lamp and probably some spot lights.

I would encourage you to have a ceiling light(s) installed. We lived in a flat with wall lights only and it was very dark, despite using the highest wattage light bulbs. After several months we had it rewired, the ceiling light made tremendouos difference.

Great work so far. I love the colour of the blue on the wall, the painting, and the chest of drawers. Are any of these pictures appealing? I'm thinking a bit of yellow would be nice to add or you can just add varying shades and textures of neutrals in the bedding, throws, and curtains or blinds. I've also included a couple with bronze as previously suggested.

Show off the stone with up lighters. Or traditional metal lanterns spaced along the wall, in copper or a metal to suit your garden and style. In a dream garden I'd have to go for gas lanterns. A much more softer effect on a wall.

I agree with Jonathan, make sure you have dimmers so that you can vary the level of lighting. You need to consider different layers of lighting; pendants and downlighters will throw light down, whilst uplights either on the floor or walls will throw light up and illuminate the lovely beams you have. And don't forget lamps will throw another dimension in. Having the ability to vary these using dimmers gives you lots of versatility to create different moods depending on what you are using the space for. You may want to use some spotlights that you can angle to wash light down the walls or highlight a picture. If you can stretch to it, a system like Lutron gives you greater flexibility over what you can achieve with your lights. It's basically a super-duper, all-singing dimmer switch that can allow you to program different moods according to how you are using the room. For example, when eating in your dining room you may want some downlighters on a low setting providing a background ambient light whilst the feature lighting (ie. pendant &/or picture lights) are slightly brighter. It's the combination that will make it much more warm & inviting. Have a look at books by Sally Storey of John Cullen lighting (or their website) for more inspiration. Your 3rd picture was of Bocci 14 lights. These come individually or in groups (some custom made installations of these involving hundreds look absolutely incredible, with a price tag to match!). The actual dimensions of each ball though is only 10cm, so you may find you need quite a few to give you enough light & wow factor. Understood :-) you may be surprised at our costings though, everything we do is handmade but at a reasonable cost as its all done in house, sometimes words like bespoke, custom, crystal and chandelier tend to mean high prices but not with us.
